Looks basically similar to the omni-direction aerials fitted to most
touring caravans these days. I suppose that they work - after a fashion
- but they wouldn't be my first choice for a permanent installation!

But given the high field strengths we now have and the fact that many
locations have transmitters in all directions, I would think most people
will have some success with them.

I remember that sort of thing from the seventies. A little coil of wire or
something and a short lead to the TV, with a money back guarantee.

I think they just relied on inertia selling.

My auntie had some sort of indoor aerial that was just a coil fixed to
the wall behind the TV. It worked very well until she was sold a
digital aerial and a Freeview box. Nothing worked as it was. She
plugged the old aerial back in but it no longer worked. I didn't try
to explain as she won't understand. I found her a local aerial/TV man.
I hope he understands non technical over 80's

These days most sets have sufficient sensitivity to receive off a short
piece of wire.

I photographed one of those a year ago and uploaded it to Flickr. No
doubt I meant to post it here, but it seems I forgot.

No, I remember someone posting it before ...

better than using a bent coat hanger?

Not better than a bent coat hanger outdoor and high up, no.

The UHF folded dipole I made for my MIL, out of a coathanger, and
mounted on the inside windowsill of her bungalow, behind the TV set, at
a height of about 2' 6" above the ground, worked perfectly on analogue.

You certainly could get a signal from just a flylead at my old house, but
then you could also see the transmitter from the lounge window.

It's made in China, doesn't claim to be omnidirectional, and has a
20db amplifier with mains PSU.

The instructions say 'no alignment...omnidirectional...mount on the side
of the house facing the transmitter'.

Dave seems to like it

http://youtu.be/gMmkWvgbA_w

He says it's unidirectional. I note that the 'dome' is not completely
circular, so it could be true.

Or on reflection, did he actually say "undirectional"?
