You can go to the USA without a passport, but you need to use Pearl

Probably a utility bill will do too.

I know that a driving licence will work because they let in a
colleague who had had his passport stolen. Then again he had a very
strong regional accent.

Not in the UK, but the car has just been licensed for use in Nevada (I
think it does have to have a legal driver at the wheel ready to take over).
