They did, but Prime Minister Harper used the restoration of the names
as political bait.

QUOTE

Former Defense Minister Paul Hellyer, who removed the royal labels from the armed
forces in 1968 when he served in Liberal Prime Minister Lester Pearson's government,
accused Harper of trying to turn back the clock to a day that doesn't exist anymore.

"I'm incredulous," Hellyer said. "Canada should be for Canadians at this stage of
our development and we should emphasize our achievements whether they be in the
field of art or in the field of armed forces and no longer just try to be a pale
imitation of somebody else."

Hellyer, 88, said if they were still alive Pearson would be appalled and former
Liberal Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau would
"probably say something that wouldn't be printable."

UNQUOTE

Of course it was all good potential business for sign writers and stationery printers.

Thanks for that. Supported by the Canadian Forces website:

I remember my cousin was in the Canadian services when the integration
took place. I did not realise the separate service names had been
restored albeit within the Canadian Forces (which is no different from
all our services being part of MOD).

Me too, but for what it's worth, I use Microsoft Security Essentials.

I have a jaundiced view of anything I would be expected to pay for if
something equivalent is available free of charge. Zonealarm have
recently combined antivirus with their free firewall, so I've
uninstalled AVG free antivirus and now have the two most important
types of security software combined in the same application.

How did they get into a position where they have the clout to do this? By
selling a product that didn't work and that people couldn't use?

There are a few nasty fake security tools out there that if they get a
grip of the machine, tend to leave it in a state where ccleaner would
then trash things in a big way...

I had one on a customers machine the other day where once it did its
stuff which including moving all the start menu items into one of the
temp folders you had to be careful not to empty cashes or delete temp
folders until you had recovered what was not supposed to be in them!

what you used, and do an 'Analyse' and 'Run Cleaner' on both 'Windows'
and 'Applications', and then a 'Scan for Issues' on 'Registry'. Back up
the registry when invited to do so, and run 'Fix Selected Issues'. Then
go to 'Tools', 'Startup', and have a look at what runs when you boot up.
If there's anything there which doesn't look like it really needs to be
running unless you need it, have a think about whether you should
disable it (getting advice if you're not sure). [Note: I find that Task
Manager doesn't always show everything which is running, and that
CCleaner doesn't always list everything which runs at startup.]

If you *really* want to know what's getting launched at startup, grab a
copy of Sysinternals "autoruns" - that knows about far more devious ways
than most tools.

But who would buy a PC with anything else pre-installed? The few
people who don't like Windows probably want nothing pre-installed. The
last time I was buying a PC it cost extra for nothing!

As has been demonstrated by the return rates on many netbooks which were
available in windows and linux versions. Quite a significant minority of
the latter get returned and exchanged for the former. Presumably just
because it "different" or does not play the game on the CD their mate
lent them etc.

Get rid of Norton or Mcafee.

Less than 2% of what resources? How on earth can you assert that?

Memory and performance. Others have measured it in tests.

Then "others" must be clueless. Without qualification of what level of
CPU performance and other resources you have in the first place, you
can't express its loading as a percentage.

Certainly on older platforms, many modern AV products have become
unusable, since they basically consume all available resources for
significant periods of time.

but it depends on waht teh resources are to start with. I dare say it
might be true with lots of system memory, but on my laptop some years ago,
the machine crawled - before I got rid of Norton

To be fair, all the major AV products have gone through phases of
imposing very high loads even on modern hardware. Most have also been
rewritten at various stages to try and reduce the impact. So Norton now
for example does not suffer in the same way it did a few years ago etc.

I don't remember him saying much about the uniform but he was (I
think) a Captain when he wanted to be a Wing Commander.

I would. Not only that, I have done so.

The point being that lets me and the vendor ensure in advance that an
alternative of the kind I prefer does, indeed, install and run OK on the
specific set of hardware I'm buying from them.

Of course, I can then (and do) wipe that and install for myself to
ensure I know what is on the machine, etc.

Slainte,

Jim
