According to Wikipedia, when Bredolab was in operation, it controlled 30 million
infected hosts, and Mariposa had 8 - 12 million infected hosts.

Conficker which is still in operation is estimated to control about 10 million
infected hosts.

At one point even the English Royal Navy and the French Navy were infected.

Even a PC belonging to somebody in the ***British*** Royal Navy

Or the UK Royal Navy (United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern
Ireland).

What Anti-virus are you using?

I have done the task manager and other things suggested here. the
performance score is as it should be. I will take it apart and de fluff
it soon. then see where to go from there.

It is as if it is 'suffering from a headache and is a bit distracted. '.
but all things appear to check out ok

Thanks for the input.

Get rid of Norton or Mcafee.

Install AVG and Advanced System Care. Schedule AVG to run once a day and
run Quick Care once a day and Deep Care once a week.

E & OE ;-)

Norton takes less than 2% of resources and runs in the background.

Less than 2% of what resources? How on earth can you assert that?

Could be many reasons (one unlikely one being that mentioned by the
Linux troll).

For a start, run disk cleanup (Start button, and search in the box for
disk cleanup).

If it's still slow when you've done that, open Task Manager, go to
Processes, and see if anything is using a lot of your CPU time which you
aren't aware of. Then decide if you really need it running all the time.

What about registry repair software? I have heard mixed views about
whether this is useful or dangerous. I am using one (which I won't
name in case of the latter proposition) which found about 1,700
registry errors after Tuesday's set up updates.

I should add that I am using 64 not 32 bit.

I'm also running x64.

Must say that I've never used a registry cleaner. There seem to be two
opposing views on whether they do any good or not (or even harm). I
remember reading somewhere about running several different registry
cleaners one after the other. They /always/ find things the other ones
left behind! I wonder if the outcome of that is eventually you could
empty the registry completely. :-)))

In any case, I can't see a few surplus registry entries slowing a
computer down that much, if at all. Maybe it might take a bit longer to
boot as it reads through all the junk, but once booted, would it make
that much difference? But as I know next to nothing about the registry,
I'll leave it to the experts to comment further.

Memory and performance. Others have measured it in tests.

You're wasting your breath. There are those who still think in terms of
the old Norton of years ago which was a resource hog. I have run NIS
for years and am happy with it. All that is needed is to check what is
using CPU time by running task manager - it would soon be obvious if any
of the Norton activity was eating up CPU cycles.
