I doubt that I would even suspect that such an experience might be
shared by others.

Perhaps I am incapable of thinking outside the box.

Those of us outside the box think that you are a Cat named Schroedinger
who may or may not be dead.

ALSO ... Virus software upgrades have been known to slow PCs up and may be
carrying out deep scanning checks as well. I keep wishing avast would keep
a hash listing of all the files it has previously checked so it wouldn't
want to scan all files every time.

You might just as well say, "No, because I don't have a computer"!

But are you refusing to accept that my suggestion that there is
a possibility that the computer could be part of a Botnet is
unrealistic?

According to Wikipedia, when Bredolab was in operation, it controlled 30 million
infected hosts, and Mariposa had 8 - 12 million infected hosts.

Conficker which is still in operation is estimated to control about 10 million
infected hosts.

At one point even the English Royal Navy and the French Navy were infected.

If such well protected government systems can fall foul, then the individual
home PC running MS Windoze is even more likely to be an easy target, but
of course it only happens to somebody else and could not possibly be
somebody posting to this enlightened and esteemed news group.

[Sorry for being a bit cheeky.]

No need to apologize -- I was being cheeky as well.

It is important to note the following with respect to TDL-4 infection --

QUOTE

TDL-4 infects a computer's master boot record, thus allowing it to
run before the operating system starts up, and keep it away from
the prying eyes of anti-malware programs.

Probably because your PC is now part of a Botnet and is sending
out thousands of spam e-mail messages or being used in DOS
attacks.

I did think of that and I can say it is not doing that. I have the
protection needed to prevent that. It is possible my computer has a
hardware fault. However it is running everything it should without
errors, just slowly.

Well, in spite of the problem being asymptomatic of impending hard
drive failure, I suggest you boot from a diagnostic disk and run the
drive manufacturer's diagnostic (or Seatools) to verify the state of
the hard disk before proceeding further.

Could be many reasons (one unlikely one being that mentioned by the
Linux troll).

For a start, run disk cleanup (Start button, and search in the box for
disk cleanup).

If it's still slow when you've done that, open Task Manager, go to
Processes, and see if anything is using a lot of your CPU time which you
aren't aware of. Then decide if you really need it running all the time.

What about registry repair software? I have heard mixed views about
whether this is useful or dangerous. I am using one (which I won't
name in case of the latter proposition) which found about 1,700
registry errors after Tuesday's set up updates.

I should add that I am using 64 not 32 bit.

I'm no expert, but I would do as suggested - ie open Task Manager and
check what's running, and see how much of the CPU's time it is using. In
mine (using XP), the System Idle Process usually sits at 99% when the
PC's not doing much. In particular, see if there's anything which looks
like it shouldn't be running, or if it's taking up an inordinate amount
of CPU time.

Although you've already run an unnamed registry repairer, you could try
running CCleaner (which I've never found does any harm) if this isn't
what you used, and do an 'Analyse' and 'Run Cleaner' on both 'Windows'
and 'Applications', and then a 'Scan for Issues' on 'Registry'. Back up
the registry when invited to do so, and run 'Fix Selected Issues'. Then
go to 'Tools', 'Startup', and have a look at what runs when you boot up.
If there's anything there which doesn't look like it really needs to be
running unless you need it, have a think about whether you should
disable it (getting advice if you're not sure). [Note: I find that Task
Manager doesn't always show everything which is running, and that
CCleaner doesn't always list everything which runs at startup.]

It may be worth emptying your Temp folder and Temporary Internet Files
Folder.

I've found lots of people who have GBytes of stuff they don't know about
in those.
