To make room for HD channels, the "idiots in charge" removed ITV
3 & ITV 4 from the line-up. The Rabbit channels are aimed at a minority audience - and you could probably count the number of local viewers on the fingers of one hand. Furthermore, it makes no sense whatsoever to retain any of the +1 channels (and/or minority interest channels), where the local transmitter has insufficient capacity to carry all of the mainstream channels. As a result of this flawed decision, viewers in many rural communities in Cumbria were obliged to install satellite, to receive ITV 3 & ITV 4. Prolly simpler to do that in the first place;!... -- Tony Sayer |

In fact once DSO is completed nationally, 10% of the population will not be able to receive ITV 3 and 4 terrestrially. You're right, it's an idiotic situation, and before J G Miller jumps in and gives us all a lecture on the fact that there are no 'PSB' requirements to retain ITV 3 and 4 on all transmitters, and +1 and shopping gunk is more lucrative blah, blah, blah, I don't care. There's limited bandwidth on DTT so those useless muppets at Ofcom should *regulate* the platform, and effectively ensure that a sensible limited selection of channels is available. Another thing to consider, is there would have been plenty of room on DTT for HD services, if it wasn't so clogged up with ****e. We wouldn't have needed to launch DVB-T2 either. It's obvious you can only sustain a limited number of services commercially on DTT, so actually, without all the floss we could have remained at T1 for all six muxes. -- Mark Please replace invalid and invalid with gmx and net to reply. www.paras.org.uk |

Bandwidth is a national resource, and as such should be used in a way that benefits the public the most. That should be the number one rule, and commercial considerations should be made to fit round it. I'm sure that in such an environment plenty of money would still be made. Bill |

Unless you bother to elect legislators who are going to enact a policy of public interest rather then commercial market deregulation, then the current light touch regulator OfCon with the mandate to adjust conditions to enable commercial organisations to maximize their revenue, nothing is going to change from the current situation of a plethora of +1 stations, teleshopping and telephone prostitution services. |

It's those of us on relays with just 3 muxes that noticed it most when the limited range of programming available to us on local launch was cut back even further (the +1 channels do not provide any additional programming - a delay provides nothing new). In that 3 week period during which DTT started and analogue ended there was a significant increase in the number of dishes in this small area but the local aerial bod saw no extra workload and even the £40 switchover help scheme had only one taker for DTT.
