One of the main reasons for the different model numbers is for
price matching - or rather avoiding it.

A model number in Curry's may be a digit or two different from
the identical set in Comet or JL or Argos or whatever. You then
ask for a price match and get told it is a different model, where
in fact the only difference is the label!

If you are buying 20000 units per year or £6-8m in old money -
and that is the sort of turnover of the bigger sheds - you carry
quite a bit of clout if you threaten to stop selling ALL of a
manufacturers products if they won't co-operate - and I talking
here of 20K in TV's only. Look at Samsung and see what else the
likes of DSG sell - cameras, stereos, mp3, computers, even white
goods - and that is real clout!

Things were the same in the 50's and 60's, when many TV sets were
essentially identical inside, but had different cases, and were sold
under different manufacturers' names. For example, you had Ultra
(utility model, plasticky), Ferguson (middling, chipboard, simulated
wood iron-on veneer) and HMV (luxury, sometimes real veneer). All made
by Thorn.

but - according to Which? - Ferguson's colour sets were much more reliable
than HMV's. Go figure.

Yes they used to come up with some real bullocks that lot!...

Default Time for a new TV... Got it!

Looking to get something of 32" (would like 37" but a bit pricey and
energy-guzzling).

Took the plunge and spent some of my retirement cash (from 18 months
hence!).

Samsung UE37C6530, LED, 37", HD Freeview.

The picture's good even on SD on the (non-Freesat) satellite box; Freeview
isn't really useable as the aerial's too old.

Got it set so that the input power is reading about 48 - 52W; surprisingly
the PF is about 0.9 - 0.92 (the sat. box is 0.49).

Thanks to all who gave advice and information. I'll keep the thread for
reference, as there's so much in it.

These days sometimes these model number differences just denote the

Generally the 'U' at the end of the model number means 'UK plug' I've
just discovered.

Arranged to view my neighbours decent Sony LCD, but she's just
informed me that it's playing up. Just over a year old hence it's
going back to John Lewis.

There is no way I will purchase a new TV without a sensible 5 year
warranty - which limits me to JL and Richer. My colleages in the
defence industry reckon modern lead-free solder is a recipe for
disaster.

Agreed - I bought tin-lead solder for CH work and have a good stock of cored
solder for other uses.

Samsung UE32C6620 ...There is no mention of it on their

Very quick reply via their 'Contact Us'
Quote:
'We advise that you visit our website www.samsung.com/uk and enter the
following model code UE32C6600 as it has the same specifications as
the UE32C6620 the only difference between them is a cosmetic
difference.'

I also asked them about brochures - they told me I could pick one up
from any of their dealers. Went to their web site for dealers -
eventually found the bit where you had to put your full code in and it
returns a few possibilities. They weren't suitable or convenient
(Dixons, Currys etc). Hence I now had to invent a six digit postcode
to look further afield. This isn't easy as most random generated
postcodes do not exist! Eventually obtained some from 'houses for
sale' sites, and located a few reputable Samsung dealers within
around ten miles.

Phoned them - all reported they were unaware that Samsung produced
brochures.

This helps to explain why their are countless numbers of models in the
shops.

Isn't it the old trick of supplying the same TV with different model
numbers to different retailers so that you cannot take advantage of the
" if you find the same product at a cheaper price we will refund the
difference" offers?

The older Samsungs are not noted for their in-built audio quality so an
external amp is probably a wise move.
