That would cause a lot of bother with existing gear. I note with interest
that the much vaunted Goodmans Smart talk box for those who cannot see
well, is only sd capable.

I'm sure if you told someone their telly will not work on normal channels
in a few years, they would be livid!

broadcast in HD."

Techwatch provide no source for this statement.

It should be possible for BBC-1,2,3,4 to go HD on satellite and cable,
but as you so rightly observe this will be rather difficult on
terrestrial
unless ITV-1/stv/utv and SC4/C4 get bumped from PSB-3.

But if another multiplex were to be converted to DVB-t2/MPEG-4 then
the possibility does arise.

Furthermore, I fail to see how all of the BBC regional news programs
will be in HD by April 2011, despite how much people will benefit from
watching the Peter Levy "Look Hull" Show in glorious high definition.

The BBC has told producers that all shows should be filmed in HD."

Filmed? I thought most shows were recorded on video tape.

I did read somewhere that the plan is to gravitate to all a DVB-T2 by
2017, this makes good sense to me, as I guess that within two or three
years chipsets will soon be at DVB-T price levels, which means that every
STB and TV sold should be equipped to receive the new standard.

In article , Brian Gaff

Why not bite the bullet and say terrestrial is dead and use sat.

Nah!, can to that furrign power might jam it all!....

I'm sure
local problem areas could have very cheap little cabled up systems.

Then maybe the uhf spectrum could be used to make a new dab... hides behind
cactus.

Sharp thinking that;!..

Why not simply switch to the superior DVB-T2 standard, which can apparently
give anything from 30 to 50 per cent increase in capacity?

"The BBC has announced that by April 2011 all BBC channels will be broadcast
in HD.
This will mean that there will be an HD channel for each of the BBC's
current channels, allowing those viewers with the right equipment to view
their favourite shows without having to keep switching over to the BBC HD
channel.
The BBC has told producers that all shows should be filmed in HD."

I see no problem here! You are assuming that all of the BBC channels
will be broadcast ON ALL PLATFORMS in HD! It does not state that! It
states that the BBC channels that you listed will be broadcast in
HD...so if they are all broadcast overall using FreeSat or via Sky,
then the statement holds true, even if none is broadcast using DTT.

Clearly, unless there is some capacity released prior to analogue
switch-off, then I too fail to see where ALL of those channels would
be squeezed into DTT.

I thought the latest trend was to record straight to disk

I think the term may be used loosely just as people still refer to
dialling phone numbers and direct dial number even though modern
phones don't have dials. *I still refer to taping TV programmes even
though I don't use tape. *- Hide quoted text -

Why not replace the word 'tape' by 'record'?
