Mine is ITV HD on Freesat (Both Red Button and Channel 119). It didn't
look anything like 1080i to me. As I said, not much better than SD. In
fact I've seen SD picture on the BBC that have looked better.

But you haven't seen the ITV SD version.

I switched over to have a look and it didn't look much different. I'm
not a football fan anyway, so no real loss. I was just interested to see
what the picture was like.

As with the last World Cup, the ITV SD broadcast matches are over
compressed and covered in artefacts. Last time it made most of the
matches they carried on DVB un-watchable, and 4 years doesn't seem to
have improved things.

They may assume that the average football fan will be either too thick
or too ****ed to notice. Maybe they're right.

The 'Info' on my set said it was 1080 (I did not notice if it was 'i'
or 'p'). That was STV HD on Freeview.

I did notice that there was no ITV HD DOG for most of the match and I think
it disappeared after another glitch near the end of the first half.

The bits I saw didn't look like HD.

The DOG is back now. I've just compared the current World Cup programme
on Freeview SD, Freesat SD and Freesat HD.

The SD versions have motion artefacts that are absent on the HD version.

On the matter of the DOG, it has been rather amusing that people have
been complaining about its absence. This is the opposite of the normal
complaints about DOGs. :-)

The DOG is fine if it's toned down. It hasn't been too bad on both BBC
and ITV in recent weeks.

You also have to remember, for many people their friends knowing they
have HD is more important than actually having HD.

What they need is a TV that will put an HD DOG on the screen regardless
of the incoming material. That could be justified as a TV set ident
rather than a channel ident.

Get it right for who? It's a business - not a free service. Which gets its
income from ads.

Traditionally they're not shown whilst the game is actually being
played...

Commercial television and live events are not compatible. A near live
solution is to delay the event by the duration of the ad break so the
event can be continued until there is a suitable time slot to squeeze
in the adverts. Another solution is provided by the BBC!

I did once jokingly suggest here that no action would be missed if the
event was recorded continously and shown in speeded-up form between ad
breaks. 5 minutes of ads followed by 25 minutes of action shown in
catch-up mode (25/20 = 1.25 normal speed) during the 20 minutes before
the next ad break.

Another solution is provided by the BBC!

....who do themselves no favours by making themselves look like a commercial
broadcaster, with all that **** plastered over the end of programmes, and
between them.
