The recorder would work but you would have to record from an external
source. Any inbuilt tuner would be as good as useless.

Even tho Oz usees PAL and the same or similar digital system as the UK?

Not necessarily. For 'steam' analogue, many TV sets - even if not
totally multi-standard - and could be configured for use on PAL-I or
PAL-B. And would the Australian off-air digital (usually in 7MHz wide
channels) not be similarly re-configurable (at least, with some units)?

Yes - it will make PAL50 DVDs as are standard in the UK/Europe.

It will certainly work with a 'PAL' AV input (eg from a set-top
box), but any DVDs recorded will be Region 4. It won't play UK Region
2 discs. Many units allow this to be changed (or even made
'regionless'), but some are not user-friendly in this respect.

Recorded DVDs would be region free.

I sit enlightened!

Just remember to put the disks in upside down ;-)

As the recorder comes from south of the equator, won't the discs also
rotate in the opposite direction?

Being serious, the real answer is that you have to look at the
differences in standards. It depends on whether the menu options allow
you to re-configure the DVD recorder adequately for the UK. A modern
unit may allow you to do this with no problems.

Apart from several differences in the off-air TV frequencies and system
standards, another difference is that the Australian DVD (if you really
mean DVD and not hard disk) is Region 4, and we are Region 2. This means
that a DVD recorded on the recorder won't play on a UK player (or even
on computer, unless you use the 'right' multimedia player) unless the
region code can be changed to match. However, many DVD recorders/players
allow you to do this (mine does) - and even to set the code to 0 (works
world-wide).

Before going into further into things, which recorder are you likely to
buy (or have bought), and can a detailed specification or user manual be
downloaded?

It's the Panasonic DMR-WX380 which has HD Freeview recording A Pal of
mine in Oz is coming to the UK soon and wants to know if he can use it
here. If he can I think I'll ask him to get me one too! The price
there is $499(about £285), the price here will be £549, Bit of a difference!

This from someone who thought recorded discs were region coded.

Where does it say that this model has a DVB-t2 tuner?

Freeview HD in Australia is not based on DVB-t2, unlike Freeview HD in the UK.

It will likely work provided the tuner covers UHF channels 21-69 (which from
memory Aussie Freeview boxes do cover). But only for DVB-T muxes. Does the
new DVB-T2 Freeview HD mux contain any non-HD content?

The channel spacing is 7MHz in Australia not 8MHz as in the UK I think, so
the tuner may or may not cope with that (or it may be possible to reconfigure
it).

PAL is an analogue standard, not digital.

Both countries use MPEG-2 and DVB-T for SD broadcasts but HD is totally
different. Australia uses UHF and VHF though, whereas the UK only uses VHF.

Confusingly, both countries use the brand Freeview, although aussie Freeview
is different to UK Freeview for the above reasons, amongst others.

BTW you got the model number wrong on an earlier post.

Aussie instruction manual here...
