The licence fee is purely a "UK thing" of course!

The payment to each channel channel in the Sky/Virgin "basic tier" is
~pence/month/customer. To run an "advert free" channel on this sum just
isn't possible!

In the US people who want advert-free programming have to pay a LOT extra
for
the like of HBO or Showtime.

It would be interesting to find out how much people are willing to pay
for an advert-free service. For the existing channels I would pay
£2.50 per channel per week for an alternative TV service that had no
adverts or DOGs. My current viewing would work out at about £300 a
year.

Conveniently enough, my ISP is about £30 per month and that does give me DOG
**** free advert free TV programmes... I am also the Director General, Chief
Scheduler, Censor, Editor and Controller of my own channel.
