This from the same Terry Casey who wrote "I don't know of ANY digital STBs with a CATV and UHF input" and then two minutes later "Ah yes! You are quite right! I've just taken a look at one!" This from the same Terry Casey making veiled accusations against someone who could only have obtained the knowledge they had by connecting equipment in contravention of VM's terms and conditions... except that not only are there no terms in the VM contract prohibiting it, but it's also actually a recognised and common installed setup? If I were you I'd try measuring up to your own standards before you start making accusations against other people. You have not yet demonstrated that you possess the requisite knowledge to question the word of anyone else in this group. -- |

Even in situations where the STBs don't have the analogue bypass built in themselves, particularly insistent customers who wanted an analogue bypass had one set up by the installation engineers. (Example: Incoming cable feed to splitter, splitter output 1 to CATV input of set top box, spiltter output 2 to UHF input to set top box. Result: Analogue bypass.) Which UK digital set-top boxes have a 'CATV' and a 'UHF' input? None that I know of but some cablecos did provide UHF/CATV combiners with suitable filtering for analogue set tops so that the subscriber's aerial could be combined with the STB output. There were about 3 different versions, I think, to cater for different transmitter groups and STB output channels. No doubt some of these are still around but the post doesn't read as that is the case. As I said in another post, Zero Tolerance appears to make up a new scenario with every new post as 'evidence' to support his latest claim. However, as Paul Martin has reminded me, there was such a DTV STB so, perhaps, in this instance he is right! Terry Surprises me that the cable co's are still in bizz, after all what do they generate apart from relaying Sky and the other broadcast channels?.. -- Tony Sayer |

Ah yes! You are quite right! I've just taken a look at one! I wonder how long the 'UHF input' facility was perpetuated? If it was intended to provide the same function as that of the add-on unit fitted on the back of the analogue boxes, it was intended to be connected to a TV aerial. The aerial signals were bypassed around the STB, and combined with the box's modulated UHF output signal. However, in normal operation, there would be only 4 or 5 TV signals (which would be on known frequencies) coming from the aerial. If the full spectrum cable feed (typically from 48 or 128MHz to 600, 750 or even 860MHz) was first split, and then fed to both the 'Cable' and 'UHF' inputs of the STB, the results could have been somewhat unpredictable. -- Ian |
