Ah, yes, I remember now. It was for Douglas on the IOM. It used to take
its main analogue RBL from Caldbeck, but during opts would be switched to
Winter Hill. Totally superfluous now of course. Caldbeck analogue has
gone, Douglas and its relays have been DSO'd, and Douglas DTT is fibre fed
from the 'Winter Hill' SIPSI.

Maybe it's still used by some other relay stations?

I don't think so, with Caldbeck gone that rules out anything to the north,
I'm not aware of any near the Yorks border, in fact a couple were migrated
to Emley for BBC1/2 a few months ago. I suspect the cue-dot indent has just
been left in circuit because it's been forgotten about.

Probably, and the masking box too I guess.
What were the relay arrangements for ITV at Caldbeck?
Given ITV's history of big programming variations between regions, I assume it
was just set up as a permanent relay of Winter Hill?

Caldbeck was the main transmitter for Border TV based in Carlisle, Border was
the smallest mainland ITV company. There was never any RBL link with Winter
Hill, although for a period in the 1990s Granada did provide Border with
playout facilities, they later transferred to YTV Leeds (along with Tyne Tees
and Granada themselves).

The only difference between Winter Hill's relays and Caldbeck's are the South
Lakeland sites that moved for ITV/4 from WH to Caldbeck in 1982. For BBC 1/2
they remained tied to WH. Border TV has now all but gone, just an opt-out of
Tyne Tees.

In fact, both Border TV and Tyne Tees Television have gone off the air.

Since November 2008, the Channel 3 service in the ITV-1 Border and ITV-1 Tyne
Tees regions, along with all other regions in England and Wales, is provided
by ITV Broadcasting Limited.

True, but they still sometimes refer to themselves as Tyne Tees on air.
I heard it with my own ears when I was up there a couple of weeks ago.

Nostalgia for the former glory that was the station on City Road?

Or a shortened form of the cumbersome official name "ITV-1 Tyne Tees regional
service"?

And how to viewers in the Border region react to the mention of "Tyne Tees"
or was this on the regional news opt out only seen in the ITV-1 Tyne Tees
service area?

Just like some people still refer to the gas board or the electricity board,
neither of which have existed since the 1970s and 1980s respectively.

I heard it with my own ears when I was up there a couple of weeks ago.

But not in a formal station identification. In fact the formal station
identification does not even include the name of the region being served
(except sometimes in Wales).

No, it was watching via Caldbeck, so the ex-Border region.

And for spelling 'analogue' like that, take this note to the head.

There's another opt on BBC2 analogue this week.... without the cue dot.
Maybe someone at BBC Manchester reads this newsgroup?

This morning's repeat on network BBC2 was 16F16, and it looked to be that the
material within it was native 16F16, so going back to your original assertion
that it's masked to 14:9 on analogue, is that mask applied to a 4:3 CCO.
The position of the score bar during matches will provide a clue ?
