news I'd have thought some enterprising company would have had one
which put the sound out via nicam by now, so those nice older
tellies could be used by peeps who get confused by AV.

1) How many stereo tellies do not have SCARTS?

Its a fair question, Nicam broadcasts where established offically in
the early 90s and the advanced Tv directive was not modified for
scarts until 2003 with coming of digital, so for most of the period
manufacturers were free to do what they wanted. Scarts were well
established but then so was cost cutting and feature stripping.

Having said that I don't think anyone would know the answer, except
that it probably a significant enough number compared with those
that have no scarts generally.

2) If you get confused by the AV button, then are you would
not notice if it was stereo or not.

Back in the early nineties Hitachi (also Sony?) produced a television
which had the very sensible option of allowing the RGB or composite
input to be assigned to any channel number on the remote.
I appreciate that with modern stuff using multiple inputs (which
have to be selected via a menu) things would be a little more
difficult, but being able to allocate just a couple of buttons to an
input of one's choice would in my view still be a very useful
feature, especially for the elderly.

That would be great, on my Toshiba I have to press the AV button 5
times to get to EXT5.

Yes and it would be such a simple feature to implement.. call me an old
cynic, but I wonder how many new integrated DTV's are sold solely on the
basis that 'it's so much easier for mum/dad to use.'

GBP15 for a refurb Humax F2-Fox

Thanks for that - just ordered one from misco (£19.57 inc VAT and
postage) to replace my HUMAX MGTU-1 which suffered from split-nit a few
months ago.

I'm using it in the bedroom with an 15" Hitachi TV I bought back in 1982
and is still going strong. Seems such a shame to dump it just because it
doesn't have a SCART socket.

I've got a non-reworked Human F2-Fox T1. It's OK, but when you're
looking at the programme guide, it does not display any live picture
insert. Also, it's got an on-board mains PSU, and it runs maybe a bit
too hot for comfort (even on standby), especially when standing on
something else which also is generating a bit of heat. I would go for
something with an external PSU, which should be a lot cooler.

Mine arrived next day (i.e. yesterday, Thurs) and seems fine.
Found all the channels but is showing strength of 60% and Quality of
0% on all.
Looks like I'll have to try a better indoor aerial!

Do you have a link which will let us see your review? I'm sure
Tvonic's were thrilled with your thoughts and have included a link to

Just for the archives, having spent several hours with yards of coax
and mains extension leads, DO A FACTORY DEFAULT!
Now can get almost all channels perfectly with a £3 indoor aerial
(which local electrical retailers said wasn't possible).

BTW. It is NOT a good idea to do the factory default if you a Humax
PVR in close proximity (I've now lost my recording schedule!)
