The rumours did say they were testing actual HD at some events - perhaps
they will be able to offer it next season!

suppose they would still have the problem of getting hd feeds from the
cars - although you can get tiny things now that record HD - albeit with
crappy lenses and low bitrates.

Seconded. And they could also ditch the intro sig tune sequence, which
presumably somebody is being paid for every time it gets played. What's the
point of intro music on a show that's *about* music? Fading straight through
to background hubbub was always good enough for radio.

Ah. They will need "High Definition Digital Aerials" mounted on the
cars.

Why do they put it on at all? How much of the £142.50 licence I just paid
goes on it?

F1 is the most boring, expensive, over regulated motor sport going.

One of my pet hates is the way presenters seem to think that they have
to say something *immediately* the music stops. This is particularly
irritating on Radio Three where they also shout at the tops of their
voices. Wasn't there a broadcasting cubicle at most large concert venues
in the 'good old days'?

quote
example of Radio 3's donnish wit was when the Hebrides Overture overran
and crashed into the Greenwich time signal. With Olympian
self-possession, the announcer, Tom Crowe, opened the microphone and
apologised: "I do hope the Mendelssohn didn't interfere with your
enjoyment of the pips."
/quote

Come back Tom, all is forgiven.

They might need HD operating licences for the vision mixer and EVS
(slo-mo/reply machines) to operate in HD mode, those licences are the
expensive bit, the hardware will almost certainly be 1080i compatible.

However my guess is the entire set up is predominately HD, with upconverted SD
islands (such as the car cams etc), and as mentioned only a SD downconvert
gets sent to the rights holders.

The use of introductory sequence with recorded music very much negates
the dramatic effect of using a static caption and cutting live to the
announcer, as you mentioned with radio, which enhances the feeling of
a live performance, even though it is digitally delayed.

Difficult to play if you've motor neurone disease.

Ask Stephen Hawking. He'd know.
