Mainly because US shows were made by film studio offshoots - and had
pretty well guaranteed worlwide sales.

But I agree with you - nothing wrong with Sergeant Bilko and his pals.

as a kid it always confused me - because it was called the phil silvers
show.
so i expected a guy called phil silvers to be doing different things - short
skits, longer bits, a bit of singing maybe - and yet every week it was the
same - a drama.
my little mind couldnt understand it.
and i also was convinced he was copying top cat - even though he came first.

I presume he was a big star in the US before Bilko so could demand that
billing. Although unheard of in the UK - to me at least. Perhaps it even
developed out of earlier series which were more as you thought, where
Bilko was merely a sketch.

The story is that Phil Silvers in the end became a recluse watching endless
recordings of Bilko until his death

Seems Hollywood is the loneliest place on earth ;-(

Alan Johnson does not live in Leicester, Moss Side, Oldham, Tower Hamlets,

IMO the sequel series, "Softly, Softly" would have been an even better
choice.

They were 'one off' plays, not series.
