Default BBC response to missing Look North

I've just checked, and there appear to be potential differences in
coverage at:
Bassenthwaite
Bretch Hill
Charlbury
Harborne
Over Norton
Sandale

Thanks for that! I feel better now.

Good.

Bill

Well I feel worse. I thought I'd see what all the fuss was about. But
I couldn't find "Look North" in iPlayer. It don't come up using the
iPlayer search function. It's also not in the alphabetical listing
under L. If I browse past days' programs, Look North comes up as "not
available".

I *could* get to see it by going to the page for the program
http://www.bbc.co.uk/looknorthyorkslincs/ and clicking through from
there. But that ain't using the iPlayer link the BBC gave you. So I
can't be doing it right. Do the BBC block iPlayer from access from here
'cos it might be too strong for my Southern, metropolitan sensibilities?
Or is it just that I'm too dim?

Either way, I'm left feeling digitally challenged.

I remarked about Sandale. The other sites all have the same power on 4 uhf
services (BBC1,2, ITV & Ch4). Where have you checked?

What sort of differences ?

Bassenthwaite has an extra beam for BBC 2 and C4 to overcome DTT co-channel
problems, so if anything its BBC 2 coverage is greater than BBC 1's.

Sandale

Yes, BBC 2 was lower power (and the other end of the UHF band) than BBC 1, but
remember that BBC 1 and 2 Sandale only existed as Scottish alternatives for
Caldbeck viewers north of the border, and to provide correct feeds for the
Caldbeck relays in Scotland. Caldbeck BBC 1 and 2 (along with ITV and 4)
eclipsed the service areas of both of Sandale's channels.

(I talk in the past tense, because Caldbeck and Sandale are currently in the
middle of the DSO process, and in two weeks all their analogue transmissions
will be gone forever)

All the stations you mention (except Sandale) have differing ERPs and/or
additional beams for one or more channels. The higher ERPs are there to
counteract co-channel interference sources (mostly DTT) sharing those
assignments, so the net result is equal quality coverage for all four services
from each site.

affected. You can watch regional news programmes on BBC iPlayer.

What makes them think all viewers have a PC and can use iPlayer?

BBC One takes the decision to change its schedules very rarely and only
after careful consideration of the potential impact on its audiences. We
appreciate both positive and negative feedback on instances such as
these.

One is where viewers come to enjoy great sporting moments of national
importance.

Two blokes hitting a ball over a net is of "National Importance"? Surely
not ;-).

Andy Murray?s match was one such occasion. From the outset it looked
like the match was going to be very close so we took the decision to
move it to BBC One as soon as we could and to stay with it right to the
end to ensure that the maximum number of people could enjoy this nail
biting game.

But surely if you can receive BBC1, you can get BBC2 so why the need for
the change and screwing up all the regional BBC1 programming?

I suppose we should be happy they even bothered to reply but really, was
it worth it?

Paul DS

My thought was whether tennis viewers are so thick that they cannot change
channel to BBC2.

There must be plenty of Eastenders viewers and tennis fans who found the
wrong programme on their video when they got home from work.

Hmm, well with all the channels now, surely they could have just put up a
caption and told folk where the tennis was. Seems a bit old fashioned to
assume that bbc 1 is where everyone would be. Has the whole country been
assumed to not know how to change channels all of a sudden or what?

Dear Mr Wright

Thank you for your e-mail regarding BBC Look North on 3 July 2009.

I understand that you're frustrated at being unable to view BBC Look North
on 3 July 2009 due to extended coverage of 'Wimbledon'.

We recognise that some areas of the country no longer have analogue
transmissions and therefore regret any inconvenience caused to viewers
affected. You can watch regional news programmes on BBC iPlayer.

With this in mind please be assured that I've registered your complaint on
our audience log. This is the internal report of audience feedback which
we compile daily for all news editors and scheduling teams within the BBC,
and also their senior management. It ensures that your points, and all
other comments we receive, are circulated and considered across the BBC.

Thank you again for contacting us with your concerns.

Hardly seems worth me complaining about last night's effort.

8 episode omnibus edition of Deutsch Plus at 4-6 AM. We set the video,
and find today that the PDC signal turned off the 2 hours recording
after the first of the 8 episodes...

And no, it isn't on iPlayer. And you can't even buy it.

Andy
