Hello all,
Just grabbed a Pioneer ITV digital box from the carboot (50p, bargin i thought) so I can have freeview with a TV without scart (RF modulator). It's all setup and I can get a picture but unfortunately the buttons on the box are unresponsive (I didn't get a remote) apart from after i initially power the box on when it allows me to select a single channel, and then won't budge from that one. I understand this freezing is typical of such boxes?? Is there anything that can be done to improve this? Thanks |

I had one and in those days was the best one available from my experience, it did get replaced in more recent days by me. Over the years the features used by broadcasters have changed and been added to and these older ONdigi/ITV Digital boxes and even some early Freeview boxes can't cope with. It could be this that is your basic problem. Also without a remote I think will not help it maybe some function buttons required not actualy duplicated on the box. You could get a Universal remote making sure it does have codes for UK Terrestrial Digital before purchase, even a Pound shop might have one. Might be a waste of money though. If you do not already have Freeview they come at £15 from supermarkets, and are up to date with features. -- Regards, David FREESAT HD as it is now it is a joke. |

I've got a Pace, and it is only controllable by the remote control. ISTR that the MHEG graphics/text engine disables the front panel controls. I can't remember whether that's Pace specific, or it affects all of the OnD/ITV Digital models ? Also be aware, that the box is likely to be only 2k COFDM compatible, so it probably won't work at all after DSO hits your area. -- Mark Please replace invalid and invalid with gmx and net to reply. www.paras.org.uk |

As I recall there was a software update that disabled the front panel controls on my Nokia OnDigital box. I don't think it was the only brand affected -- Alex "I laugh in the face of danger , then I hide until it goes away" |

Having no AV knowledge I'd never heard of MHEG but a bit of research suggested that the update the bbc recently performed on its MHEG is too much for these old boxes to handle. It seems, tho, that the UK standard for subtitles on digital services is MHEG too so by enabling subs it prevents other MHEG data being downloaded and as such, for whatever reason, prevents the front panel being 'locked-out'. With subs going on my box all is well, and acceptable as my needs are modest in this respect and that it's not my main veiwing box. I would however like to know if there is a way to permanently disable MHEG on my box (Pioneer dbr-t210gbn) using the remote, but obviously I don't want to dish out for it unnecessarily. Any thoughts? Cheers Keiron |

I do have freeview but i wanted this for an old set i've got, new boxes seem largely to have loop-through only, unless you pay a small premium i guess. Cheers |

I've found that this is the case but relates to MHEG upgrade, not box upgrades. It seems that enabling subtitles prevent MHEG downloading other data and so the front panel will function while subs are active. Looking for a means to disable MHEG fully now tho. Ideas? |

I do hate to throw away basically good kit though. Its these damned folk who keep moving the goalposts that cause all this mayhem.
