Chance! About one in three worked. Maxell gold about 50%. TDK not
too bad about 90%. Latest batch is HP 1 worked so far out of 8.

So my question is.....is this normal behaviour or should I give up and
invest in another machine?

None of the four Panasonic recorders in this house have given any problems
so far. I think if I were in your position I would buy another machine,
though without VHS for the amount it would be used here a seperate machine
would be preferable.

Yeah, same here. My Panasonic DMR-EX75 has never given me any problems at
all. I only ever buy Verbatim discs too....they're usually the best.
