Record a day's worth and listen to it the following day.

Wow, you must be God, for how else can someone record tomorrows
news and current affairs today?!

BBC7 doesn't have news and current affairs programmes. What it
does
have also gets repeated several times a day.

...and is available on demand on their website for 7 days after
broadcast. The sound quality is lower than DAB, but the
convenience
and range is far greater!

How does one listen to it in the car though considering that it's
an
"On demand" service rather than a "Download"? Duh!

mplayer -ao pcm:waveheader:file=output.wav rtsp://...

But you still can't listen live or 'On demand', all listening would
need to be pre planed...

So grabbing all the programmes you like (automatically?) and dumping
them on your iPod (automatically?), giving you an entire week's output
of BBC7 to choose from is inferior to having a DAB radio which will
play you the current programme only.

What a strange idea! You'll be telling me next that a PVR is inferior
to watching live TV with adverts!

Cheers,
David.

As a physicist by training[0], it was drilled into me to always use
appropriate units, so every time they miss off the megahertz I wince.

Did you mean MegaHertz? :-p

Hertz is a name. The unit's symbol (Hz) starts with a capital because
of it being a name (with one exception). However, you write most units
in lower case, including their SI prefixes. Therefore, "megahertz" is
the correct notation.

You learn something every day. I knew about Hertz being a name,
obviously (along with many of the others) but I'd never really twigged
that writing things down in full were normally in lowercase; however,
now you come to mention it, joule, becquerel, watt, pascal etc look a
bit odd capitalised.

I stand corrected, thank you for pointing it out and now crawl back into
my hole...!

Different topic. I don't watch TV in the car.

Sigh.. I haven't got an MP3 player either.

I repeat - I want to listen to the *radio* in my car using a *radio*

I don't *want* to grab all the programmes and dump them on an MP3 player,
I want to listen over the air to a broadcast *live* - why is that such a
problem..?

Most manufacturers will do you a kit to put a DIN radio in their
"special dash".

Will they, I would suggest that on many makes / models it's impossible
due to the fact that there is actually no opening suitable for a DIN
mount, at best I would suggest that some will allow what you suggest
and that other manufactures will provide some sort of DAB back end to
interface with the existing dashboard mounted radio controls.

Jerry,

what car do you have?

My current car and my wife's both have DIN slots (in my case, double DIN
for some odd reason) my son bought a kit for his Fiesta, and my last car
had a kit available - which I never bothered with, because the original
radio was OK.

Don't mix mHz and MHz though...

to me, Pascal is a (largely obsolete) computer language. When it isn't
Blaise.

Solution: join the 21st century?

Seriously, what solution do you expect? A petition to get BBC7 on FM
or LW? A portable DAB radio connected to your existing car stereo? The
latter is more likely to work, but _could_ be more painful to use than
an mp3 player.

I don't think anyone was trying to be difficult Ivor, just trying to
find ways around a basically unsolvable problem.

Cheers,
David.

I don't know about listen again, but the live internet stream for BBC7
was actually better than the DAB version the last time I tried it.

I've used the listen again feature, but I find that every 10 of so
minutes the sound becomes garbled for a few seconds, which renders it
useless IMHO.

Is that so unreasonable..? I don't think FM is going to disappear anytime
soon and BBC7 is (IMHO anyway) infinitely preferable to the plethora of
independent stations like Kerrang (what sort of a name is that..?!) and
others.

: : A portable DAB radio connected to

And it would require fiddling with portable kit on passenger seats, which
I don't think PC Plod would be too keen on if he saw me.

Telling me to record the entire day's output just in case I might want to
listen to something is a bit silly though.
