Fox must have done something this morning. Their 5.1 channel now
fills the whole screen where it was only filling 3/4 before. The
720p picture now looks great. I wonder what they changed.

I wonder what you're doing differently. I can't believe the #1 market
Fox station just now figured out how to do HD. Even Bob Miller would
admit there are a few other OTA viewers who would notice.

Enjoy the game

They changed nothing with respect to the signal. The programs and
commercials that fill 3/4 of the screen are upconverted from 4:3 SD. I
happened to flip to the local Fox station this morning and I immediately
noticed they were doing widescreen 480i SD field reports as part of a
pre-pre-pre-pre game show.

All of the networks will broadcast upconverted 4:3 SD during much of
the day and for many prime-time reality programs as well. The SD
programs are upconverted to 1080i (NBC, CBS, CW, and most PBS stations)
or 720p (ABC, Fox, My Network, and sometime in the next several months,
Ion) on their primary x.1 HD sub-channel.

In case you never noticed it before not all of the channels programs are
16:9 widescreen. Here, as in many markets, only the weekend sports and
evening prime time programs are widescreen.

There is no requirement to ever broadcast in HD or 16:9. The only
requirement by 2009 is to broadcast in digital.

Recognizing that many households will only have SD sets, I
suspect that many, if not most will broadcast both in digital
with both SD and HD signals. I doubt that cable is likely to
become exclusively HD anytime soon.

Cable and Satellite converter boxes can fairly easily convert a HD signal to
whatever signal is needed by the TV, whether it is analog or SD digital,
720p digital, or 1080i digital (the later 2 being HD). Most of the cable
boxes and all of the satellite converter boxes do that today.

A STB for down-conversion may not be needed, either. Cox
promises to down-convert digital to analog service for at least
three years after the transition date for those who elect not to
switch to their digital service (for those living in the last century).

No, they won't do that. They will broadcast only one signal, HD. You can
watch an HD broadcast on SD sets. It's not magic. The receiver just
downconverts it to 480i. As for cable, they will all want to move to
digital QAM asap. HD has nothing to do with analog and digital other than
analog (NTSC) doesn't support HD. Digital supports both SD and HD.

I don't keep up with cable much since I don't have it, but all they are
required to carry on analog is the locals. And this was only because they
were forced to by the FCC. They will move all none local channels to
digital asap to give them more room for HD. They've already started doing
this. The bandwidth for one analog channel will support 5 or more digital
channels.
