Default Comcast Cable?

Say if I have a Comcast HDTV Receiver. Can Comcast tell if you hook up a HD
receiver to a basic cable line?

Are you saying you want to use a Comcast HD receiver with your non-HD
Comcast service so you can benefit from the better hardware, faster
menus, and better output options and you are wondering whether Comcast
can tell you're using a HD box without HD service? Is the box illegal?
If so, then the answer is yes, they can tell and will promptly throw you
in jail. If the box is legal, but their general policy is that you are
not allowed to use HD boxes without the service, then it's possible they
could tell that from the 2-way communication between the box and the
central office. Whether or not they'll really care is another story.

I had basic cable service (all analog) from Comcast, then I got the HD
box about a month ago. They charge $5/month for the HD box, but ABC,
NBC, CBS, & PBS HD channels are free. If you pay for showtime or HBO
then the HD versions of those channels are no extra charge.

So you wouldn't be stealing any type of service if you hooked up the
box, just saving the $5/month rental fee, BUT the box probably belongs
to Comcast since the past tenant was probably paying $5/month for it.
Comcast doesn't sell them. So your not the rightful owner of the box,
and it probably wouldn't work anyway - they have some sort of setup they
do at the central office to make them start working.

The STB talks to Comcast when it is turned on.

Is successful theivery of cable service really your highest aspiration?

Call them up and tell you want to use it, sure they will charge you, but you
will feel better about yourself.
