So really the only way to get the discovery channel etc is to subscribe
to
Sky?

or cable - if you are in such an area.
there's adsl based tv these days too - like bt homechoice - do they do
discovery? - maybe google for their website.

Are there any satellites other than Sky broadcasting unencrypted that
might carry these channels?

discovery isnt unencrypted on satellite - they are a pay channel.

With the exception of cable - more or less, that is what is so wrong
with Murdoch's empire. No real competition and any newcomers are
locked out by exclusive deals.

Many I'm sure would pay a reasonable sum for a decent mix of
arts/drama/science/documentary channels, they don't want mainstream
sport such as football, they maybe want tennis such as the Masters and
the odd motor race - but not F1, they don't want endless film
channels because they prefer the cinema and least of all they don't
want to pay 40 quid plus a month to Murdoch and co.

Why can't someone do a sub-tenner a month satellite service? There
surely must be at least a million immediate UK subscribers for such a
service. Using off the shelf cheapy receivers with a *secure*
encryption method for a one-time payment of say 50 quid for a CAM and
viewing card. The channels viewed being selected (online) on an
individual basis from say 10p-50p each a month, all billing being
online by direct debit with UK based call centres for proper customer
care. i.e a company that does give a **** about the customer.

There have been times since the start of DTTV in the UK when I thought
they had almost got the mix just right, it was in the ITV Digital days
but I can't be sure exactly when. A few short months later it was
just wall to wall football and then blank screens. Wasting vast sums
on football coverage and then having your competitor running a team
dedicated to hacking your encryption system does that though.

So in summary, great content, never more than £9.99 a month, pick your
own channels, use almost any satellite receiver. One off setup fee of
£50. Quality customer service. Not too much to ask for is it?
