Well, after looking at the Hitachi brochure, I've settled on that
model.

Thanks for the quick replies and useful links. I'll read through the
forums over the next couple days. Planning on getting the box on
Tuesday. Hopefully all will be well. At worst, I'll need the aerial
sorting.

I'll keep Sky going until the Freeview is up and running fully.
According to the Freeview site, my postcode should be able to get the
full package.

Thanks again,

Pete.

Why not keep the Sky box anyway, it belongs to you and an ex Sky
subscription card becomes a Freesat card with nothing more to pay until they
issue new cards, which could be a few years.

Hold on there pal. If you have had your Sky box for more than a year
just cease your subscription and use it for FreeSat - your viewing
card should continue to allow you to do that indefinitely, and you
nolonger need the phone connection.

If you want to buy a PVR then look at www.pvruk.co.uk where you
willfind a wealth of info.

If the Freesat solution suits you, then just buy a cheap DVD
recorderto keep what you want - not need for the expense of a PVR.

I thought about the Freesat option, but I want the record facility,
pause live tv etc. I could get a cheap DVD recorder, but then I'd be
spending money on media.

I know blanks are dirt cheap, but then there's storage or disposal
when I'm done.

Pete.

As I don't live in an area served by DTT, I opted for Freesat and a HDD/DVD
recorder which suits me fine.

DVD Recorders can record to DVD+/-RW disks.

You could use a single tuner PVR and use the Sky digibox to feed the
second source in to it via the SCART.

Would that be the Far East of England? A quick check at
http://www.patent.gov.uk/tm.htm shows the proprietor of several trade
mark registrations for "Wharfedale" to be

Wharfedale International Limited

Sovereign Court,

Unless you know of a very special PVR that the rest of us do not, you
cannot record on a PVR disc from an external source.

Sony and Panasonic PVRs (to name but two) have external video inputs.

In fact I do just that, (feed my Sky digibox into the RGB Scart input of my
Sony RDR-HXD710 PVR).

AFAIK only the combined DVD/HD recorders have A-D converters, enabling them
to record from an external source: 'pure' DTT DVRs just record the TV
transport stream and convert to analogue on playback.

My Panasonic hard disk recorder (PVR) can record from an external source
just the same as it can from off-air. Of course it has an analogue only
receiving section.
