Which map are you using? (or which model of TomTom)

It doesn't matter. No Tom Tom covers Ireland, except for Dublin.

Can't say I have ever tried it in Ireland, but the maps claim to cover the
republic:

From the web site:

"Map of Great britain and Republic of Ireland v6.75

Detailed map of Great Britain and the Republic of Ireland connected to the
Western European major road network. Includes Wales, Scotland and Northern
Ireland. Does not cover the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man or any other
overseas territories.Street network coverage: 99%"

I just had a look at mine (Western Europe map V660.1219) and that seems to
have detailed coverage in a few places I picked at random in the south.

When I was preparing for an Ireland trip earlier this year I assumed at
first that if I bought an upmarket Tom Tom it would cover Ireland. But just
to be on the safe side I checked up. I was astonished to be told (at the
time) both by Tom Tom and by a dealer that no Tom Tom had Irish coverage. I
also had a look on Tom Tom's own chat group thingy and this confirmed that
there was a problem. Tom Tom said at the time "We have no access to detailed
mapping in that territory" I was amazed but that's what happened.

So, they couldn't afford to buy Irish Ordnance Survey maps? How mean.

It's a lot more complicated than that and involves copyright and licence
issues.

Far cheaper to change your name to that of your car's registration
plate.

of course it is, but to say information wasn't available is complete
nonsense.

Tom Tom said that they didn't have access to it, not that it wasn't
available, which, given the purpose for which they need that access, is
reasonably correct.

I got one on a car I bought in 1989 for more or less a nil premium, so I
have kept it, shfting it on to two subsequent ones. It's book value has
more or less doubled in that time.

The main advantage is that most people can't tell how old my car really is.

Yes, but at what cost? To drive around knowing that all right-thinking

True, but if you are already well known as a dickhead that rather
immaterial.

Yup, I guess you have nothing to lose.

I find it's not much of a problem is you are already known to be seriously
rich, like me.

Still can't afford a proper widescreen TV though. Don't think all this
anti widescreen stuff you spout has any of us fooled. We know you want
one really.
