Default DVD to HDTV connections

Hi Bill,

Since the HDMI cable runs from the HDTV Digital Ouput socket on the
receiver to the HDMI-1 socket on the HDTV, I've assigned 'SAT' to HDMI
1. (Is this correct?) But, the HDTV still has no picture or sound.

I think you are simply changing the label displayed by the TV when HDMI
1 is selected as the source.

There should be a source button on the TV for cycling between sources.

If the picture is OK but no sound, try powering the TV off and on.
Sometimes the HDMI handshake gets confused.

Let's try this again:

A HDMI connector cable runs from the HMDI socket on the satellite set
top box to the HDMI 1 socket on the HDTV.

Using the HDTV remote, when I press MENU, a "Settings" menu is
displayed. I cursor down to "Setup" and select "Source".

Here are my settings:

Extension Device
AV 1 NONE
AV 2 NONE
HDMI 1 SAT
HDMI 2 NONE
SIDE NONE
DIGITAL AUDIO IN NONE

Is this right?

What I'm suggesting is that you are simply changing settings for the
title to be displayed on the screen for various Sources/Extensions.
You've set the display for HDMI 1 to be SAT. Which is fine. But it
does not change what the TV is displaying. It only sets what is
displayed on the screen as the name of the thing connected to HDMI 1.

Don't start with MENU/SETTINGS.

Start with something like SOURCE.

Have you tried powering off and on the TV and the satellite box?

Yes, I've powered off and on the TV and the satellite box.

The only "SOURCE" I can find is by going through the MENU/SETTINGS by
using the HDTV's remote control. (I've even looked through the User's
Manual for both the HDTV and the satellite receiver and found nothing
else that refers to the "Source").

How do I change what the TV is displaying?

Gary,

It would help if you could tell us exactly what model HDTV you have and
maybe we could find the manual online and take a look at it for you.
Does the HDTV have more than one HDMI input? If not, I agree with Steve
that that is just a labeling selection and you have to use some other
button to SELECT the right input. On my HDTV it is labeled TV input
(makes it simple) but on some HDTVs is is labeled something else which
sometimes confuses new owners.

You doesn't need to do anything at all on your satellite receiver. All
outputs are active all the time.

If you have some other device with a HDMI output (like a DVD player) try
to hook it up to your TV (same cable, same input). If it does not work
either you have a bad cable OR you don't have your TV set up properly.

If you can't get HDMI to work with your satellite system try to hook it
up using component cables (a set came with your satellite receiver) Be
sure that you hook up the audio cables too and select the right input on
your TV. The correct input is likely AV1 or AV2 but some sets use the
"SIDE" connect for component and you will have to check your manual.
The component input connectors are red, green, and blue.

In order to view HD material from your satellite receiver you MUST use
either the HDMI or components connections. Composite connections
(yellow for video and red and white for audio) can only supply a SD
signal (480i) to your TV.

You should not have to go to the menu to choose inputs. It does not matter
what an input is called. There will be a button labeled INPUT, or SOURCE, on
the TV remote. Push that to switch to the HDMI input.

maybe the source box is not set to output hdmi?

you may have to hook it up first via the component, or even the
composite output - and then change the output format to hdmi.

I know this seems strange, but I have run into the same wield problem
on my toshiba dvd players.
