Words don't harm eh? You said the exact opposite two posts earlier in
the thread. Standing on your head to justify your use of the language of
hate.

What would *you* like to view on TV?

I would like to watch TV shows without being constantly reminded

You'll not buy any DVDs, then?

Not everything is available on DVD. In fact most of it probably never
will be.

So what do you watch that doesn't have adverts or trails?

"Adverts or trails" were not mentioned, please don't move the goalposts.

Sorry. You said - above - 'on screen adverts for other shows'. Not being
clear what that means I assumed you meant trails.

Being constantly reminded what one is trying to watch - ie a permanent
onscreen logo - and being bombarded with onscreen adverts for other
programmes is what was mentioned.

I understand DOGS but not what you mean 'by on screen adverts'.

"Adverts or trails" are fine, as long as they are between the programmes.

Ah - trailing the next prog or ep over the credits? Most have gone to make
a drink by then.

Comparing R4 Freeview with R4 satellite, there is no difference in
background noise or its level.

Unfortunately, we can't receive FM here so I can't take the comparison
any further.

Where is your DTT coming from Alan, I'm surprised if you can get that,
that nothing is receivable for FM radio ?

Text or icons appearing alongside the station logo during other shows
saying things like (just as a random one from recently) "Cirque de
Celebrite, Sat 8PM" which seemed to appear under the "Sky One" DOG all
the damn time.

At least it's just text on Sky One - other channels (SciFi for one) pop
up large logos that often obscure the programme underneath quite badly.

Ah - trailing the next prog or ep over the credits? Most have gone to make

Thanks to shoddy timekeeping occasionally Sky One trail the next
programme (or a completely unrelated programme that they happen to be
pushing) over the _end_ of the programme, doing the "half screen squish"
and muting the dialogue ahead of schedule... now that's _really_ annoying.

We have a 'local' cable system fed from an aerial about 1km away
receiving from Darvel. It was originally a 'self help' system which has
worked very well. There's amplification at the aerial, more
amplification about halfway along and a small hut about 300m away which
combines the signal with five(?) satellite channels and drives the cable
to feed about twenty-five widely dispersed houses. Most people,
including us, use satellite but the Freeview is useful for recording.

FM is only useable on a very carefully positioned portable at crap
quality and I suspect that reception is via reflections as the direct
path is seriously blocked by a 600m hill.

Ah - right. I don't have Sky, and from what you've said I've made the
right choice. ;-)

That won't help you. ITV already do it, even on ITV1 - they often have a
"Coming up:" banner slide into view towards the end of a programme.
BBC3/4 also do it, and it's only a matter of time before it pollutes
even more channels.

Of course. But my ability to stand long-cherished shibboleths on their
heads and to see things from perspectives denied to or ignored by
others has made me a millionaire! Existentialism is not only fun, it's
profitable fun!

You provide ample proof that clarity of thought is unrelated to personal

Of course he's racist. He's from the generation that was taught to

Oh, I'll tell my parents. I wonder if they'll mind having to change the
habit of two lifetimes.

Or would you mind awfully spouting rather less balderdash?

Cheers,

Not even if everything except Radio 3 was 32kbps, which you said
would give the same quality we have now? Since they would only be for
occasional use by a tiny minority, they could all be mono, which
would make them 16kbps.

That would be the same quality as the internet commentary supplied by
PremiumTV. To be honest, it's tolerable (when listening through laptop
speakers and when the result is really important).

Admittedly you do give a caveat, but to suggest that 16 kbps is tolerable is
ridiculous.

No. I have a higher level of tolerance (for audio) than you. It is not a
ridiculous suggestion. It is verifiable fact.

It is also verifiable fact that it is intolerable. (You are proof of
that fact.)

Whether something is tolerable or not is a matter of opinion.

When you make any comments about audio quality please take into
consideration all those people that are listening on better quality
equipment than the lowest of the low kinds of devices that you seem to be
using - laptop speakers for Internet radio and a DAB portable radio for DAB.

Remember how I mentioned that I own a hi-fi system? It's horses for
courses. I do not need high fidelity sound for football. I do not need
high fidelity sound to wake me up in the morning. I do, however, insist
on high fidelity sound for music.

I suppose I could tell the rest of my family to clear off out of the
living room when I want to listen to the latest abysmal episode in the
history of Southend United F.C. I think they would find that
intolerable.

Cheers,
Luke
