Do you work for Voom? If not they should be paying you!

I was just waiting for someone to come up with that one. Unreal. Believe what
you want, I don't work for VOOM. I sent you a PM with all my responses. There
is no satellite provider that will give you a free HD setup. If you find one
let me know. It is WAY MORE than generous to offer a money back guarantee on
all equipment & installation until the end of March. In fact, it's unheard of.
Additionally there's no programming charge until the beginning of March. I'd
love to find deals like this in other product lines!!!

The $750 upfront and REFUNDABLE charge includes an HD STB, an OTA antenna and
installation for all of the above. That price happens to be very competitive
with any of the satellite providers. They are already providing far more HD
than your cable company, but you knew that. If you love your cable company than
stick with them, but why are you coming on here and deriding what others are
enjoying? I don't get guys like you, I really don't.

VOOM currently has 21 HD exclusive channels including 12 HD movie channels
offering HD movies you won't find on HBO or the like. They also offer special
interest channels, a sports channel, Showtime HD E&W, an HD weather/news
channel and Discovery HD. They will shortly be providing Starz HD, Cinemax HD,
NFL HD, NBA HD, INHD 1 & 2 and other HD channels.

As I said, you love your cable, stick with your cable. On the other hand I've
got an open mind and will give them a shot during this trial period. If the
programming is good I'll keep them, if not then I won't. But I certainly won't
approach it like you, that's for damn sure.

Also don't forget they are giving a two year in home service contract
with VOOM, as well. DirecTV gets $ 8 a month for an HD service
protection plan. So this is worth about $ 192, and is included in the
$ 749 price.

Maybe it's because he already has had experience with Cablevision and
knows how incompetent they are or looked at their success record in
other business ventures.

I've lost my premium channels for several days twice now in the last 3
months. Both times I called Cablevision and went thru their endless
menus, finally getting a real person. "Turn on the box, turn off the
box, give me the serial number, stand on your head and wait 5 mins,
should be fine in 10 mins bye...." Of course it still doesn't work.
Call back again, go thru menus, being on hold, finally they insist
they need to send a tech out, it must be a signal problem, even though
I tell them all the channels are crystal clear. Clearly, it's
something not set right on their end. Then, while waiting for a tech
to show up in a couple days, it suddenly starts working again, all on
it's own.

I think this Voom idea isn't based on a sound business plan. The vast
majority of people interested in HD either already have sat from
Direct or Dish or have cable. Dish and Direct already have about 8 HD
channels and are adding more all the time. They also have the
traditional channels like CNBC, FOX, cartoons, etc, which Voom doesn't
have. Do they expect people to have two sat services? On cable, the
other competitor, eqpt is free, and the HD offerings are constantly
increasing. (Hello Cablevision, what about your cable customers like
me? Do they expect me to go pay $750 and put up a dish to get HD
instead of just putting more on my existing cable?)

The fact that this offering increases competition is a good thing, but
I doubt it's economic viability.

I take each enterprise as a seperate entity. I take it on its merit and what it
brings to the table for me. It's already bringing to the table far more HD
channels than both of the big boys combined and, this before the addition of
other channels. You have a right to pre-judge if you like, but I choose to
examine the service BEFORE judging.

Whether it's a sound business plan or not is subject to debate and time will be
the judge. As to the big boys and their "8" channels, let's see: DirecTV has
HBO HD, Showtime HD, Discovery HD, HDNet, HDNet movies, ESPN and a PPV if you
want to include that...by my count that's 6 HDs plus the PPV. As to the fact
that they're "adding more all the time", I WISH. The fact is they are NOT
adding more "all the time". It's a torture getting them to add ONE. Showtime HD
was on the air for over 1/2 year before they added it. DirecTV showed adds for
Discovery HD for almost TWO YEARS before they added it. So I would
unquestionably argue with your characterization. If what you said was a fact, I
would never have tried VOOM.

Do they expect people to have two sat services?

I don't know what they expect, but I do know for me VOOM is an adjunct to
DirecTV and not a replacement....at least at the moment. Since VOOM is
essentially an HD service with some SD and DirecTV is a SD service with some
HD, I see them meeting 2 distinct needs. I can't imagine someone who's really
in to HD not seriously considering them during this generous offer. Of course I
do know some people that buy HDTVs and rarely watch HD. Why they bought an HDTV
is beyond me and these are certainly not candidates for VOOM.

other competitor, eqpt is free

That's cable and we're talking satellite here. No satellite provider gives out
free HD equipment.

the HD offerings are constantly
increasing. (Hello Cablevision, what about your cable customers like
me?

And I think this gets to the crux of the matter for those that appear to want
VOOM to fail or seem very angry at the VOOM concept. It seems to me that almost
all of these people are those that hate Cablevision almost more than anything
in their life.

Do they expect me to go pay $750 and put up a dish to get HD
instead of just putting more on my existing cable?)

Part of your problem is that you don't realize that VOOM is a NATIONAL service,
not just a tri-state service. I suspect that many VOOM customers have never
even heard of Cablevision. I am a Cablevision subscriber and subscribe to only
the minimum "Family Cable" and don't have any need for their premium services.
I'd much rather put that money into HD services.

The fact that this offering increases competition is a good thing, but
I doubt it's economic viability.

You could be right, but time will tell.

Forgetting the $750 install price since that really isn't much more than
about $200 more than an HD DirecTV/Dish install, the programming price
isn't too bad. If you drop your premiums from DirecTV/Dish, you could save
$30 or more a month, and get the same things in HD from VOOM with almost no
change in total monthly cost.

I know Dish has some really basic packages that you might be able to end
up saving even more.

The two reasons I'm not doing anything with VOOM is no recording yet and
the fact that I will probably be moving before the end of the "free"
period. I really don't want to deal with another install in a few months.

And, we all know that cable companies don't provide the hardware for free
either. Not only do you pay rental for the box forever, but since that
takes so long on HD boxes to recoup the investment, cable companies just
solve that problem by raising all their prices.

Makes sense, I can understand that. VOOM indicated they will be coming out with
an HD PVR in the future. Mabye by the time you move they'll have it out.

Yup! But it seems many people don't see that.

The timing looks about right, so it might end up being a housewarming
present to myself. Since it will be a place where there are no worries
about what antennas/dishes I can put up (except for FAA regulations on
tower height), that won't be an issue.

I just wish we could get FireWire on all the various STBs so that we don't
have to be locked into one recorder.

Did I mention that VOOM said their next box will have firewire?
