How do you find out which channels/broadcasts are in HDTV? My local
newspaper does not identify HD programming. I want to determine just how
much HD there is on offer to me before I buy into HD. Thanks.

Well, you could enter your zipcode at antennaweb.org. That should give you
the ones it knows about Or you might try searching for hdtv city,st on a
search engine. Or you could simply look in the yellow pages and call all
the stations listed and ask if they have their digital counterparts on
line yet. All of the stations here have had digital up and running for
some time. Some for as much as 4 years or more.

However, antennaweb only lists which stations are broadcasting
digitally, not whether they provide HD or not. Most of the network
affiliates do provide HD, but some in the smaller markets do not and may
not do so any time soon. There are small market station owners who have
refused to spend the money on HD downlink and broadcast equipment.

If the OP can provide his/her zipcode, we can find out what is
available over the air in the area in HD. In the Local HDTV Info And
Reception forum at www.avsforum.com (which is one of the best resources
on the net for these questions), there is a list last updated in August,
2005 of all the digital stations broadcasting in HD in US:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=422073

This list is NOT up to date as a number of stations have increased
power or added HD since last August. The replies in the thread list a
lot of them. The next step is to go to the specific region/city thread
and see what people state they get.

For example, in Washington, DC all seven of the broadcast networks
that provide HD are broadcast in HD: ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox, PBS, WB, UPN.
The UPN station - WDCA-DT UPN/My 20 - has been at very low power (1.1
KW) for years. But I have gotten them several times this week,
suggesting they are testing out going to increased power. However, the
OP needs to realize that not everything will be in HD, much of the stuff
is upconverted SD. The prime time scripted shows, major sport events
(but not all), some other shows are in HD. Most reality shows & network
news are not yet in HD.

For analog and digital listings: http://tvlistings5.zap2it.com
Look for programs with the HD logo.
