Was the football a bad picture on your new HD ready TV set? I thought the BBC's Freeview pictures of the Germany game were the best I've ever seen on DVB-T. Not HD, I know, but nevertheless excellent. What ? The pictures were complete and utter ****. They were totally blurred just like everything the BBC takes from foreign broadcasters and you couldn't see the features on players faces. Looked pretty good to me on a 32" analogue LCD and freeview ... Rob |

Just like the Beeb if there is a decent quality 16:9 feed available from the host broadcaster, ITV use it. That's what ITV told me when I queried their Grand Prix 4:3 coverage. So presumably Silvertone tomorrow will be 16:9. What surprises me is that even the "prestigious" Monaco GP was in 4:3. -- Peter |

Ah, good point, I forgot that... What surprises me is that even the "prestigious" Monaco GP was in 4:3. That's right, F1-TV are host broadcaster, irrespective of country hosting the race. -- Peter |

They where as good as SKY's Premiership footy, and that's saying something for the BBC. Even ITV's evening match didn't seem as compressed as normal. I thought the picture quality on Freeview good and no more. My one complaint
is that most of the time you felt like you were sat in the back row of the upper stand. The only other angle was close up. Not enough middle distance used. I noticed this in yesterday's games too. In the words of one famous card advert 'ZOOM ZOOM ZOOM'. |

And if the few bits of that England V whoever 'game' I saw whilst mucking about with STB's earlier were anything to go by, the 'highlights' wouldn't take up more than a few kB on any DVR .. ;-) All the best .. This was one of the very noticeable things about the original HD coverage of Wimbledon, all of 15 years ago. Because there was so much detail in the HD picture, directors didn't neet to go in for middle distance shots. Of course, when the pictures are also used on normal tv, there is a problem. Mind you, there may not be all that many HD camera about. -- From KT24 - in drought-ridden Surrey Using a RISC OS5 computer |

The technical quality of the picture (resolution) was excellent. The ability to deal with the contrast, the design of the stadium, the choice of camera positions, editing, (and zoom) was all terrible. There's one thing the Brits are still good at, and are probably the best in the world; sports OB coverage. -- Mark Please replace invalid and invalid with gmx and net to reply. |
