Yes, it is in Poplar, on top of a residential tower block. I do not know
its name, but it is the brown one! However, it is on a very low output
power rating (around 100W, I think) and vertically polarised, unlike CP
which is horizontal.

Google has turned up a BBC paper about reception in the area at
http://www.bbc.co.uk/rd/pubs/whp/whp...les/WHP010.pdf

I notice we are just north of the TSA of the relay marked on page 3,
and well clear of the green shadow. I think the contractors were over
simplifying things when they said Canary Wharf was in the way, more the
case it is causing a reflection. From my terrace I can see Crystal
Palace and Croydon, I guesstimate there is 30-40 degrees between One
Canada Square and CP.

As an aside, I notice the overall BBC solution (subject to disclaimer
that individual circumstances my vary etc.) is to go digital. We are
5-6 years away from analogue switch off in London, but elsewhere in the
country is not. How long before we stop maintaining analogue systems?
Especially if they are going to cost a lot to fix for only a few years
use by a decreasing number of people?

By the way, do you just have one system serving all ten buildings? How long
has the system/systems been installed?

Bill

I've only lived here 6 months so don't know the full history. But from
talking to people the site was built in several stages by different
companies to different specifications - the final new buildings being
completed several years after the first factory building was converted.
For example my building has a spare coax coming down the conduit to
each flat because the analogue astra distribution system put in during
the build sent the two polarities up seperate cables (multiswitches did
not exist then apparently) which has proven really useful for Sky+ 15
years later - but only in this one building.

The whole system in all buildings was upgraded to digital 6 years ago,
but the residents wanted to pay as little upfront as possible on the
service charge, so people were only connected to the 'digital' system
by paying the contractors as/when they wanted it done - which was just
a case of plugging them into the new multiswitch in the nearest riser
after they parted with their cash. If you think this sounds crazy then
join the club! The cynical might even suggest it has something to do
with the poor analogue performance on the system Anyone else ever
heard of an arrangement like this?

As I said earlier this needs the attention of someone who understands RF
and TV aerial systems like the one you have, and they need the required
test gear and the know how of how to interpret what their doing.

Seems to me the lot you have are in need of somewhere to tie up their
horses.

In quite a bit of the country any idiot can and does string up an aerial
and as long as they know how to connect the cable, and which way the
aerial needs to be up, and they can get that wrong!, and which way to
point it then they can get by. Once they are faced with this sort of
setup then they are well out of their depth....

I hope their cars were loaded up with plenty of water.

Don't depend on Sky Homes being an endorsement of quality.

Look for a CAI installer that is SMATV approved. The course they have to
do is quite good.

The current contractor is CAI SMATV approved. Maybe there is hope with
them yet.
