I don't think the ASA will be interested since it is on their own
website, and not on the radio, tv or printed in a publication.

I thought I heard someone on BBC radio, though I think it was an independant

only from the Crystal Palace Transmitter.

The BBC are meant to be doing _some_ HD trials in London.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/pre.../08/hdtv.shtml

It does not say what transmitter is involved, and I would guess that it
would be relatively low power.

ASA website says "The ASA is here to make sure all advertising, wherever
it appears...", which seems to suggest web advertising is covered.
Besides the OP said the advert was on p38 of yesterday's Times.....

cause for complain and compensation?

Perhaps one of the German broadcasters will be transmitting FTA HDTV via the
Astra satellite, I notice that there are several promo channels up and
running already.

Should I feel embarassed that I read that as "porno channels"..?

Rummaging around in the loft the other day, looking for some ancient beta
tapes (some going back to the early Eighties with Comic Strip episodes) to
copy on to DVD, I chanced upon some from the early Nineties, recorded from
analogue Sat1 and RTL,

These channels were always a must for the more studious among us us who
wanted to brush up on our German on Friday and Saturday evenings, after
returning home from the pub.

No, web sites are specifically excluded later.

http://www.asa.org.uk/asa/about/Guid...ook +into.htm

There are some types of commercial message we don’t deal with; these
include:
[...]
Websites. Misleading claims on companies' websites should be reported to
your local trading standards department (www.tradingstandards.gov.uk)
You can, however, complain to us about sales promotions run on websites
such as special offers, prize draws and competitions.
[...]

Besides the OP said the advert was on p38 of yesterday's Times.....

Errr OK, so re-reading that page suggests that misleading claims on a
companie's web sites are not covered by the ASA, whereas if they
advertise on another site it is covered. I think you were right.

Note the careful use of the word 'advertising' in what I wrote above.
The ASA distinguishes between 'advertising' (which they cover) and
'editorial' (which they don't) on websites, and indeed the bit you quote
explicitly includes sales promotions (and elsewhere they state they
cover banner, popup ads, and in search engine results - ads "in paid
for space"). Of course a single web page could contain both editorial
and advertising - just as a normal print page could.

Besides the OP said the advert was on p38 of yesterday's Times.....

Oops.
