Default My New Year Resolution - Goodbye Television

As I recall the original discussion, it related to Freeview. I think
you'll find the number of channels there is somewhat more limited.

Even so, there are more then 5 and I could have my 3 Parliament
channels quite easily by just making the 'couch potatoes' use proper
shops...

I'd be quite happy to see the back of all the shopping channels, quiz
channels and the like. But I can think of better uses for the bandwidth
thus liberated! (not least of which would be higher video quality for
the remaining channels).

Parliamentary coverage should be streamed live on the Internet for those
who want it, and also archived in an easily retrievable fashion as a
sort of online video Hansard. That would be much more useful.

We could have both if that many channels were scrapped!

You are forgetting that many people still don't have a fast (or
stable) enough internet connection, assuming that they have a
connection / computer at all.

But as you have such a connection why can't your comedy (or what
ever) not be streamed, after all it hardly responsible for what
happens in the country / world...

Well then, they must go without! It's new technology either way, and a
broadcast medium is better suited to material destined for a mass
audience. Your idea that we would all be glued to the cut and thrust of
parliamentary debate if only it were all available on full frame TV
channels is pure self-delusion.

Neither, I would submit, is parliament (most of the time). But I'm all
for proper video-on-demand TV, delivered over broadband. Especially if
it gets me HD. Bring it on.
