And in mine. The longest one has lasted is nine months; the shortest, two
months. Utterly unreliable.

Both the Maxtor Diamond Max 9 drives in my PC seem to still be working well
(nearly two years now).

Same here, I always buy Maxtor Drives and usually still going strong when
I've sold the PC and made a new one.
I'd say as usual it's Sky and a crappy design not letting the drive stay
cool enough inside the box (or certainly users not turning their boxes off
at night going off the old myth that the box will last longer if left
running 24/7)
I doubt an insurance company would pay out for a burned down property either
in the situation where the owner does'nt turn off all electrical appliances
when not in use!

Maxtor are generally considered favourite I think.

Well only the *statistical* meaning of the word "favourite", because
more people have them!

Quite. This is a vicious circle.

I would go for a drive with a long warranty and Seagate (5yrs) and
Samsung (3yrs) spring to mind.

A couple of months ago came across an article about fitting a larger disk
drive to a Sky+. It had a detailed description, complete with photos etc.
as to how to do it. Now I can't find it on my laptop and my wife wants to
get a Sky+ 160 instead of her 20gb. Can anyone point towards a (very)
detailed way of doing this please?

Having asked on a similar group myself, I was pointed towards this

https://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?sku=308644

Following the instructions at

http://www.morlocks.co.uk/sky.htm

I did it no problem.

If I can do it, anyone can!

All works fine so far, the intermittent freezing problems I had are no more.

The Maxtors I was referring to were inside PCs. Some of them even had extra
drive cooling.

Reg, thanks very much for the links, that is exactly what I had seen
before (and lost)!
My wife has a Pace 3100 but I'm not sure if that equates to a V2 box or
not. I don't know how these versions are worked out. Similarly, I've
just got a Thomson 160 box (DS1 8201) although it says 80gb on the
packaging and 160gb in the handbook!
Looking at the excellent detail given it should, as you say, be
straightforward!
Thanks again.

You might be surprised. Run Maxtor's diagnostic software even over a
drive that appears to be working and it can reveal a critical error
(e.g. Your drive is JUST on the edge of failing entirely) and instruct
you to return it to Maxtor post haste.

Maxtor's RMA/returns procedure is excellent. But it needs to be.

Indeed. The worry is though that people may look at your list, and
seeing lots of Maxtor drives, think Maxtors are the "best" ones to go
for whereas they are actually the worst (IMHO). From a list of working
drives, purchasing decisions ought to be made on factors such as
reliability, running temperature etc - and in a PVR, length of warranty!
:-)

Good point. That list isn't linked to from anywhere on the Internet except
the thread on DigitalSpy where I was asking for people's experiences with
the latest software.

I'll try to remember to mention the fact that it's not based on any long
term testing if I ever point people to it again.
