Am also getting ITV1 FTA. Although am getting Central West region on
103. I Live in London. Would love to get Scottish TV on 103. Ahh well
will just have to watch via my Technomate Box :-)

Either borrow a card from Scotland (but only if you wish to stick with
Scotland and not switch back for London news) or add the channels
through the Set Up Menu.

Yes, good news, lots of ITV1s. Is there much local variation in
programme
content?

the regional news, and sometimes late night stuff - at least that was the
case back when i used to bother to watch itv.

Usually I've noticed about three half hour programmes a week (noted in
Radio Times) but I can't find any this week.

Caveat: this statement is not meant to cover Scotland or Northern
Ireland which have other programmes as they are not part of ITV Ltd.

Well I have now seen the correct local news and weather forecast for the first
time!

ITV News has always been FTA & available on Astra 2D. See

And so they are. I can see Scottish TV East and West (only the

So ITV1, Scottish TV, GrampianTV and UTV are except for news and
adverts the same?

That's not what he said. He presumed the two Scottish regions differed
in adverts only. He did not say that applied to ITV1, Grampian or UTV -
all separate companies. He did say he could the others (on Other
Channels, presumably).

It didn't make a statenmant, it was just a question because I haven't
watched ITV1, Grampian and ScottishTV before very often (UTV sometimes
when I am in Ireland). But is it true that those are different
companies, just wondering? They all went FTA at the same time and at
least GrampianTV, Scottish TV and the several ITV1 regions seem to have
the same programme as far as I have seen yesterday while UTV showed the
same match like ITV4 yesterday night.

Cheers

Grampian and Scottish are 'ITV' companies, but owned by a company
called SMG (Scottish Media Group). Ulster is a stand alone company, as
is Channel TV.

There used to be 15 different ITV companies. Each of these covered a
different region of the UK, (London was served by two, Thames, Monday
to Friday afternoon, and LWT Friday evening to Sunday)
The largest five companies provided the bulk of peak time programming
to all 15 regions, and the whole operation was known as the ITV
Network.

Every 10-15 years the licences of those companies to broadcast were
renewed (at first based on each company's programming quality and
performance) and other companies could apply to replace them. In the
last round (1991) the system was changed to one of the 'highest
bidder'. All ITV companies were very profitable (they had a virtual
monopoly on TV advertising in the UK) so were heavily taxed by the
government. Under the new system instead of past performance, they had
to declare in advance what they would be paying if they were to win a
new term.

In 1993 some ITV companies lost their licences, and were replaced by
others. It's a long story (because in some cases the highest bidder
didn't win !) but in order for the some companies to remain in
business and maintain their financial commitments they started to
merge.

The situation today is still 15 regions, but only four companies. ITV
Ltd own all 11 licences in England and Wales, SMG own the two main
licences for Scotland, Ulster still have Northern Ireland, and tiny
little Channel TV the Channel Islands (off France).

The two companies that merged to form ITV Ltd (Carlton and Granada)
have hijacked the name 'ITV', much to the annoyance of SMG, Ulster, and
Channel.
All 15 regions still show the same programmes, the only differences are
local news and features, and commercials, so to all intents and
purposes ITV-1 is a national network with local opt outs, just like
BBC-1.

Quite so. The reason I exempted Grampian, Scottish and Ulster was that
I believe they have more regional opt-outs than those in my comments.
The reason I did not mention Channel was that it have less opt-outs than
the English regions.
