ITV1 & 2 now FTA (Free To Air) on Digital satellite - Yep as of this morning
November 01st ITV1, (Ch 103), ITV2, (Ch118) have now joined the Free To Air
(FTA) club!

And about time too.

Now only Ch4, Ch5, E4, More4 to go.

Good news indeed. However, unless we see C4/E4/M4 and C5 (and any others
M&M, for example, is that FTA?) as FTA I can't see were the BBC/ITV
Freesat initiative is going to go. FWIU, C4 has an encryption deal with
$ky until 2008, C5 until 2009. So, as I see it, if C4 et al are to join
Freesat (if indeed they want to) then C4/C5 would need to get out of
their $ky contract, or possibly dual illuminate if they stay put at
28.2. Of course, they could perhaps set-up on a different satellite so
getting round the $ky issue.

Personally, I really wish C4/C5 would go FTA. I can then go and buy an
FTA satellite PVR (no $ky+ for me!) as alternative/backup to my Freeview
kit. However, all said and done, the Freesat idea is pretty confusing
when you consider $ky's own freesat offering.

Still, we can live in hope, I suppose. Sigh.

I have ITV4, but the receiver doesn't recognize the station name and
just gives out a 5 digit number, usually this changes after a few days.

Amen. Topfield are poised to sell their satellite version in the UK. If it
is as good (in potential) as the TF5800PVR, I'd be surpised if the BBC/ITV
did not want to do a deal with them.

It's only C4 and FIVE holding up the freesat party now.

And so they are. I can see Scottish TV East and West (only the adverts will
be different?) and Grampian - and, in fact, every region. And ITV2.

So ITV1, Scottish TV, GrampianTV and UTV are except for news and adverts
the same?

Cheers

They do already sell satellite PVRs. The TF5010 (160GB) is listed at £479 on the
Turbo website.
I would like to be sure that a 7 day EPG was available. Interactive support
would also be nice.

Well my Toppy catches 80% of what I programme, but the EPG especially after
the clocks-go-back-**** this weekend is not bullet proof.

Yes, good news, lots of ITV1s. Is there much local variation in
programme
content?

the regional news, and sometimes late night stuff - at least that was the
case back when i used to bother to watch itv.

Usually I've noticed about three half hour programmes a week (noted in
Radio Times) but I can't find any this week.

Caveat: this statement is not meant to cover Scotland or Northern
Ireland which have other programmes as they are not part of ITV Ltd.

Why would that affect the Sky issue? They don't own the satellite, that
is Astra's.
