Default Toshiba DLP (RP) contouring artifacts in image vs Sony Grand Wega LCD

To put this in context I live in PAL country. I recently went through a
process of choosing a RP TV and the choice was between the Toshiba
52JM9UA ( I suspect the US version of is the 52HM95 the key differnces
being the tuner type, HDTV tuner and cable card inputs (the US version
doesn't have VGA and the PAL version no firewire) and a Sony Grand
Wega LCD RP ((both 52")

I was leaning towards the Sony but waht held me back was the fact that
the PAL model has no digital inputs nor VGA. So no way to playback from
a upconverting DVD via HDMI or DVI and no easy way to connect a PC (I
did think about a VGA to component box). The Toshiba had both HDMI and
VGA and in the store the picture looked pretty good to me. Good blacks,
no pixel structure observable and good angle of vision. So I got that.

Well I am not as happy as I could be. This is because there is
noticeable contouring on the picture on the Toshiba. This shows up most
prominently during motion when the edges of the picture start to smear
and lose definition. It happens on all inputs and seems to be worse
when the original signal is not good (like analogue cable). But even on
DVD over component it can be seen (albeit less often).

Just wondering if folks who have DLP RP's have you seen this type of
behaviour on your picture? I guess since they all use the TI chipset it
is either a problem with the technology or perhaps the way Toshiba
implemented it?

I did send the set back for warranty service and they replaced the
scaler board but really that did not make any difference.

Certainly the Sony Grand Wega LCD RP has a great picture and the screen
door effect is not that noticeable and contouring is neligble

Thanks

Larry
