Oops!, Someones bought a crappy one here?

Surely not the cheap un's that will only let you play the discs recor=

ded
on the machine and not on any others.
Perhaps you prefer the *disc filling* fancy menus as on commercial DV=

D's?

The amount of absolute pap they put on those just so DVD Shrink has t=

o
work overtime on an hour and a half movie is ridiculous!

Perhaps waiting for the phoneline connection type that check your not=

playing an imported movie so the Film companies can kill the machine =

for
doing so??

Originally I bought a cheap Alba and it was not working properly. So I=

took
it back and got a more expensive one. I just don't think they are very=

good
for recording something quickly at the last minute. Insert disc, wait =

20
seconds or so for it to come off standby only to find that the disc doe=

sn't
have enough space or whatever, erasing contents takes a short while.
Whereas with tape I can just record over whatever is on the tape and no=

t
have to waste time deleting it.
Its just little niggles that annoy me. Maybe if I had spent =A31000 on=

it, it
might have been the best thing ever but there with still be limitations=

with
DVD recording over VCR. Tape may be old hat now, but at least I can ta=

ke a
tape out of the machine and put it back another day and it would pick u=

p
where I left off watching a programme. There might be chapters but tha=

t
relies on a person remembering to note which chapter they left a progra=

on when they last viewed it.

yes, there are many advantages to tape which are being left behind. We
will get used to the new things but I'd rather we didn't have to.
sadly it's getting harder even to find quality blank video.

Maybe DVHS will start to take off, particularly if hi-def becomes
popular.

you just never know do you. They have to find a way to make dvd
quality as good as quantity, or the other way round.

One that I DO miss is *Audio Dubbing*

Pressing audio Dub on my SVHS Machine brought up basically audio record and
a paused picture, Used to be great for adding a little music on the end of
movies to get rid of that darned voice-over woman yapping half way through
the credits.
Nothing like that on DVD Recorders Sadly :-(

yep, I almost whooped when i saw it mentioned in my manual until I
realised it meant the other dubbing, ie: tape to dvd.

Thus spaketh Paul Heslop:
Is the panasonic -r aswell as ram?

I'd be interested to hear from users of -r -rw on quality and any
advice on the best discs to use (excluding the priceless taiyo nyuden
or whatever they're called!)

The two Panasonic's I have are -RAM and -R. Newer ones are also -RW.

I mostly record to RAM, much prefer this type of re-recordable media over -RW
/ +RW.

I wanted a minus format recorder so chose the Panasonic.

I didn't really understand what ram does. Apparently the VR facility
on -RW allows timeslip (though I haven't tried it), but I know it also
allows deletion of any chapter, renaming etc.

Biggest snag with the -r -rw format seems to be less development, so
there appear to be more =r types as they go to a much higher burn
speed.

There are more +R as Philips don't mind licensing the technology for pennies,
whereas the official minus format the cost of a license is higher, so the
cheap players use +

Can't say I've noticed the difference in Burn speed. I burn both + and - at
high speed when using the PC.

Prefer - over + more reliable.

Well, I am mighty fed up of jitter already. I thought it might be with
using the new ridisk 8x but my son loaned me some datawrite 4x and
they will jitter too. It seems random and i can cause it by rewinding
and fast forwarding. It can also be stopped the same way. Do the
panasonics have jitter?
