Should we get rid of shovels and spades just because we have

mechanical
diggers like JCBs?
Yes, for applications where the JCB is more effective.

Horses for courses.... if you want flashy, then go and join a web

forum.
I don't want flashy. I just want something utilitatarian. That means
"something that works".

What you mean something like a spade Bill?

I use three different computers to access the newsgroups and I have the

I download around 2000 text news items a day composed by 20 or 30
different programs. I don't see the same problems with formatting in
these posts that you appear to be having.

To me that suggests fundamental system
shortcomings, not maladjustments at this end. I just can't see why I
can't import from Word

Could it be that Word is the problem. Many other programs follow
Internet/Usenet standards and allow posting without problems.

Are you actually exporting from Word or are you cutting the words out
and leaving behind all the formatting information? I doubt if you are
actually asking Google to open a word document so that it can apply the
correct filters (even if they did exist)

without the message getting messed up. It can't
be so difficult for the experts to alter something so that any text
imported can be transmitted properly.

How does the Google interface know that the raw data you are pasting
comes from Word and not from one of a thousand different
programs?

Some sort of import filter or
conversion routine perhaps?

The simple answer is to stop using the rubbish interface at Google
Groups and subscribe to a proper news server (the better ISPs provide
this service for free). In addition use a program designed as a news
reader/composer.

Because it wasn't set up that way and Google advise, nay tell, you
not to do it.=20

Newsgoups / usenet does, believe it or not, have some "rules", they
are called RFCs. The rules are really guides as to how usenet will
work and it does work if users and posting software follow the
"rules". There may well be a case for implementing importing (not
pasting) from word but it wont happen unless you make an effort to
raise a Request For Change.

I am surprised that a go getter like you should have resorted to the
"someone should do something about it" syndrome instead of doing your
bit to sort it, one way or the other. =20

Now if you would use a competent newsreader to post, then you
wouldn't (shouldn't) have a problem pasting fancy text from an office
application. I have just tried pasting various point size, bold,
underlined, italics etc. etc. to a reply to a news posting in uk.test
using this newsreader (see headers) and there has been no problems
with the text getting screwed. See
which when viewed on this
newsreader has just put the text in plain font and point as
**specified by the newsreader** (not the office application).

So the answer to your problem is there. The experts have solved it.
The solution is simple. Use a proper newsreader, and the problem with
pasting from office will be solved. RTFH and it will be all sweetness
and light, even your signature could get fixed! 8-)

Before the apostrophe police step in, probably in the guise of John
Porcella, for Gate's read Gates.

I use Google to prevent the disaster of having to lift my arse out of

the
chair. If you *know* something exists Google will find it.

So where's the remote for my JVC telly gone?

It's down the back of the sofa, obviously.
