Sorry, no knowledge.

It ends today, currently 99p. Think I'll just go for it, not much to
lose.

There doesn't seem to be any problem when some bossy company wants me
have some new software. They just download it, sometimes without so
much as a by your leave. For instance bloody Adobe automatically goes
on line and does I know not what every time I use Photoshop Elements.

Bill, Install a copy of (free) Zone Alarm from
www.zonelabs.com
You can then set it to block programs and stop them going out and
speaking to their masters.

I don't know which is the biggest intrusion in our lives, the damn
government or the damn software companies. I give a false name and
address now every time I'm asked, and if they ask what gender I am I
put hermaphrodite. I bought something on line the other day and they
wanted to know my date of birth! What the **** has that got to do with
them? Can you imagine going into a high street ironmongers to buy a
pair of hinges and being asked when you were born?

About time we got rid of it then and got something up to date.

Well Google does say *not* to use control characters when posting to
newsgroups. (That to me means don't paste stuff from word (office
type or similar documents. It probably means more to other posters). =20

I notice, yet again, that in the offending post
your character
set is utf-8 (In Lotus this character set is used with Rich Text,
whereby bold and underlining etc. etc. are used in a document. What
the set is used for in other Office packages I do not know).

I have just set up a google account, default settings using local
language, and posted to uk.test the special characters on my
keyboard. they all come out OK. See

So I conclude that nothing needs to be "got rid of" but something in
your set up or the way you construct your posts *may* not be quite
right..

I appreciate your input and consider it valuable and worth reading ,
but this ongoing problem with unreadable characters / data makes for a
difficult time for your readers. In fact your post
was rendered
completely useless due to this problem. Surely if you have gone to
such considerable effort to post it is worth taking that little bit
of extra time, trouble and understanding to ensure that the widest
audience can read, appreciate and learn from what you have to say.

Now what was that saying about workmen and tools? I am absolutely
certain it could never be said of you. But think of your PC as a tool
used to post to newsgroups and why do we, your avid readers, suffer
so?

[Now off to don my fireproof kit 8-) ].=20

Should we get rid of shovels and spades just because we have
mechanical
diggers like JCBs?
Yes, for applications where the JCB is more effective.

Horses for courses.... if you want flashy, then go and join a web

forum.
I don't want flashy. I just want something utilitatarian. That means
"something that works".

The point is, the majority of people know very little about how
computers work. What you're saying is analagous to suggesting that
everyone should get the bonnet up and adjust the carburettor from time
to time. The whole computer thing is user-unfriendly to an extent that
no-one would tolerate with any other consumer item.

I use three different computers to access the newsgroups and I have the
same problems with all of them. To me that suggests fundamental system
shortcomings, not maladjustments at this end. I just can't see why I
can't import from Word without the message getting messed up. It can't
be so difficult for the experts to alter something so that any text
imported can be transmitted properly. Some sort of import filter or
conversion routine perhaps?

I use Google to prevent the disaster of having to lift my arse out of the
chair. If you *know* something exists Google will find it.

So where's the remote for my JVC telly gone?

It's over there ---
