People normally foam at the mouth when I say that more channels = less choice, just the illusion of choice. You are right, I think :-) In 1987 I visited America, at a friend's home in Princeton left to my own devices I looked at their TV channels, 88 there were - all rubbish except one that looked interesting so I stayed with it. As the credits rolled at the end it turned out that this was BBC2's Horizon with an American voiceover. Is there a moral here ? Proves that we still make good programs, but why on earth did they put an American voice over? Maybe it is about time we did it with the stuff we get from the states. "Well now home entertainment was my baby's wish So I hopped into town for a satellite dish I tied it to the top of my Japanese car I came home and I pointed it out into the stars A message came back from the great beyond There's fifty-seven channels and nothin' on" Before I got sky, I used to watch a couple of the discovery channels over at a mates house and most of the time he was saying that there was nothing on. Now I got my own Sky, I now realise what he says is true. I only got Sky to get the box after the 12 month contract is up, I will unsubscribe. |

(in message ): are you the official upholder of the english language, We all are. By the way, it is 'English'. The first sentence should have a question mark, but you missed that so you're not even that good at it! |

May I take this opportunity to thank you for your attempt at educating me. Please note that I accept your offer of help and advice with good grace and no insults. Hmm. Much as I'd like to believe this, your general posting tone tends to make me read the above as just another snotty riposte. Oh and by the way: an entirely appropriate definition of 'pedant' and one which you might not be so pleased to confer upon yourself is: Pedant, n. One who puts on an air of learning; one who makes a vain display of learning; a pretender to superior knowledge. I pretend nothing. You see? There you go again. Perhaps you intend humour but it simply reads as your confirming possession of superior knowledge - an unwise assertion, as you only belittle yourself by continually demonstrating the opposite. ABC1 seems to be a rehashing of the worst style of US TV station. ITV just seems to be emulating them slightly less successfully (excluding ITV3 which I think is worth watching from time to time). So they are both no good then. I saw ITV put Airline on yesterday and the one that was on, have been seen about 6 times. Yeah, I know what you mean. Some of the episodes I can mouth the words before they're spoken :-) I think ABC1 is marginally worse, if only because it's imported trash instead of British trash. |

Radio 4 have some good stuff on. I think ABC1 is marginally worse, if only because it's imported trash instead of British trash. American humor is not really my thing. films are ok, well some are, but I do not like American sitcoms. |

Our resident grammatical expert will be along shortly to put his finger on it, and supply the verbs missing from my first three 'sentences'. It was not meant to be a pun or anything really. |

We all enjoyed it, anyway, so thanks.
In your defense, I must say your post brought a little color to my day. I always enjoy this newsgroup; it's part of my daily program and definitely my favorite, with its catalog of clever contributions and labored humor. Bill |
