freeview subscriber channel advice pse?

Hi
I've just got a Freeview set top box for my son, and have discovered
we cannot get some of the channels. On further investigation it
appears we need to go out to the shops and buy yet another freeview
box with a card slot and dump the other new one so he can subscribe
to UKgold and such like.
Is there another way round this issue, or is this the case??

Even the Freeview website seems far out of date, there is no mention
of pay channels, and also says we have no coverage in our area!.. How
wrong they are!

I reality you are not missing anything, when you got the Freeview box you
would have known what channels you were getting, so the ones you can not get
you wouldn't have known about, if you had known about them and you wanted
them, you would have got a Top Up TV compatible box.

So you got yourself a box for the free channels, and that is what you receive.
There has been plenty of advertising over the months, on TV and instore for
TopUp TV, so it would have been a hard task to be uninformed on the choice.

That is the case.

Bear in mind that even if you do subscribe to TopupTV you will not get
UKgold or any of the other channels 24-hours-a-day. TopUP TV only
broadcasts a few channels at any time out of the package.

I wasn't aware of this. Why pay 7.99 for part-time channels? Sounds
a bit, well... if you pardon my coarse language..er..****!

TopUp Tv widely promoted in store and for example in Argos cat near
freeview. TopUp tv isn't worth the premium.
Many retailers have a no quibble exchange policy if within 30 days, so
you may be able to upgrade

How much did you pay? Over £40 and you were ripped; if £40 is costly
then the £8 a month + £20 setup is probably beyond you.

Unless of course you did get a Top-up compatible box which is more
expensive - then go check the topup.tv website where you can signup (there
may be an online discount reducing the sign up fee).

TBH, I never found this to be the case. Whilst browsing for a STB I found it
quite clear that some had card readers, allowing for the Tits-Up-TV service,
whereas those without card readers never allowed this service. After
glancing in one or two shops, looking at what was available and taking note
of specs etc...this was all clearly understandable to me. Those that do use
the service stated so in the specs, those that don't never.....or even
actually stated that they were not TUTV compatible. And I too was initially
unaware of the service.

That seems to be a fundamental principle behind Microsoft's push of
their winXP product.
