what are these for please, been asked to find out by someone but I

CAM = conditional access module.

Many channels are encrypted, to view these encrypted channels require your
satellite receiver to have a CAM for that channel, there are numerous
different encryption methods, so instead of making a satellite receiver like a
Sky Digibox whereby the CAM is embedded into the box, manufactueres make
satellite receivers with CI slots (Common Interface) where you plug in the
CAM, this way you have the choice of hundreds of receivers and different
encryption methods.

On these CAMs will be a card slot, so you can insert a viewing card.
