Default Humax 8000T or similar

Hi

I nearly bought on of these PVRs until the salesman (Currys) said it won't
record from an external source.
Is this correct?
I was hoping to use it as a replacement for a video recorder, and possibly
re-record to DVD if I actually recorded anything worth keeping.
If this is the wrong bit of kit for this, what can you recommend?
External source would be either a Sky box, Top up TV box or a free to air
digital sat box.
The DVD recorder I have is a Phillps DVDr75.

TIA

That kind of limits its usefulness.
I can't imagine it would have been a difficult feature to incorporate.
Oh well....

I know what you mean with score one for Currys.
I had my doubts as I was once told by a Curry's salesman that RMS meant Real
Music Sound.
He seamed quite pleased so I didn't go into the fundamentals of measuring
power in sinusoidal waveforms.

So I know where there is a Curries branch were somebody has read at least
one manual ;0)

AFAIK it will allow re-recording to an external source although I have not
tried it. The output of recordings will only be (obviously) via DTT from
it's own tuner.

If you require recording from other external sources you need in reality
something like a HDD/DVD-RAM/R recorder but unfortunately these are not as
yet on the terribly cheap side in comparison to the Humax you had
considered.

Ain't that the truth; I got a daewoo setpal from QVC and backed it because
the replay was terrible; while trying to check it out I found the lack of a
separate input made trying to work out what was going on impossible.

Fortunately I could get my money back, but I won't drop that clanger again

True, but ideal for timeshifting.

The Humax records the digital stream directly, any external input
would need to be a digital stream or require an A-D converter.

You hit the nail on the head....
I was trying for a cheap solution that would not look out of place with the
other AV equipment.
It seamed like too good an idea to be true.
I may be as well flinging together a PC to the job untill HDD recorders come
down to a better price...... just have to convince my wife we need a PC near
the TV etc.

My ears are ringing already.

Which of these external sources (if any) do you possess at the moment? Each
has an equivalent PVR with built-in source, e.g. Sky+ box for Sky. And you
could still copy from the PVR to the DVD-R.
