My Philips 1500 for example, the maker is refusing to upgrade these boxes.

My advice is unless you see the one you are to buy giving the 7 day EPG in
the shop DO NOT buy one

I'm also very annoyed that my philips dtr 1500 wont be getting a much-needed
software update, at the time it cost f*ing 90 squid; you'd think for the
profit they must've made on it they could just shove a software update OTA
for a few weeks. It's not even hard to create this DTT software for boxes,
any fool with minor programming knowledge could do it. Argh so irritating...

I was actually considering doing it myself, there's a serial port on the
back of the box for 'upgrading software' - and with the current EPG not
updating properly with the time, i'm very close to trying to DIY/M

These things aren't just your common or garden PC, programming them will
not just be a simple matter of hooking up a serial cable. You'll need
all sorts of stuff that I suspect Philips wont supply, like
specifications for the programming interface, compilers, libraries, api
references, information about existing software (i.e. how to integrate
into existing software), specs for the actual data transmission format
etc (although you might eb able to get that from elsewhere) and so on -
they might even use some sort of encryption on the software to not only
prevent "DIY" activity like this but to protect their software actually
on the unit.

Unless you were involved in the original programming of the software or
have access to someone who did, you'll probably be out of luck, or you
have about 6 months free for you to work on it full time.
