Teuchter (Scottish) a derogatory term used by Lowland Scots for a dull

anthony.j.cunningham will have to take full personal responsibility for his
use of the term to describe viewers of the Scots Gaelic channel TeleG!

I doubt anyone in the Highlands and Islands watches it. It's viewers
are almost certainly the dull lowland fools who think that learning
Gaelic as a second language and spending their coffee breaks
struggling over the Scotsman's weekly Gaelic article makes them more
Scots than the rest of us.

Having had a Freeview box at a Scottish address for almost two years now, I've
yet to spot TeleG actually broadcasting. My daughter is Gaelic-medium
educated, yes. Anyone wanna make something of it? I thought it might a)
challenge her a bit more than mainstream primary school and b) give her a
decent step-up when it came time to learn other languages: they talked about
French-medium at her PS, but they couldn't get a teacher.

I'm English, by the way, so being `more Scots than the rest of us' isn't
really an issue. Anyone that wants to call me a `dull lowland fool' can
come within arm's length and give it a shot. Did no-one ever teach you lot
about not ****ting on your own doorsteps? Jeez...

What's a Teuchter and where do they dwell?

Chambers dictionary says:

Teuchter (Scottish) a derogatory term used by Lowland Scots for a dull
thick-witted Highland.

Popularised by Billy Connolly long before he became popular outside of
Glasgow. IIRC, his sketch went along the lines that the name derived
from "tough", not because they were macho, but because they used to eat
each other and didn't have proper cooking facilities. ;-)
