You recall incorrectly. The 'magazine and row address group' (MRAG)
has additional error protection, but the date and time (if present
in the header) are sent as ordinary text characters (7 bits plus parity).

Be careful. Some Panasonic S-VHS machines (I have one) use the VBI
to store their own data (tape library, subtitles etc.) so although
they could in principle record near-perfect teletext, in practice
several of the data lines are wiped out. The result: error-free
text on some rows and none on others!
