Actually this isn't a bad idea. I could start one of these £1.50 a
minute numbers and give it out to shops and put it on forms.

You can't get one of those numbers without permission from ICSTIS.

Shame.

And
giving it out to other people without a cost warning would be a
serious breach of the codes under which you were issued such a number,
leaving you liable to hefty fines.

I'll take my chances. Most of the other users of those numbers seem to
get away with it nicely.

"Sky Insurance" is perhaps trickier. Sky have a right to phone about the
service as you are a customer of theirs.

I disagree. Sky don't even have the "right" to know your phone number
at all, nor indeed is it any of their business. Sky need to know three
things: your name, your address and your payment details. It ends
there.

I always advise my customers never to put a phone number on the Sky
contract and never to communicate their number if ever they are asked
for it by Sky. That way they never get bothered.

No I said "any stray" which you have changed to "all"! I regard ~2-3 stray
calls a YEAR as a major success for TPS.

a) Just put the phone down. You don't owe them any politeness.

b) Register with the Telephone Preference Service:
http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/
This should prevent you getting unsolicited marketing calls.

As I said, I am and it didn't.

Get a phone with a caller ID display? That's what I've done, any call
that comes up with PRIVATE or NOT AVAILABLE, I just let the ansaphone
get it.

they announce themselves) is, I believe, another company.

Surely Sky have a right to call you about services you already have, not to
sell you a new one?

Better yet, get BT to stop all un-identified calls

I can only recieve calls if the other end is willing to give a number.
