That's a trick that has been used by other broadcasters to hide
channels from Sky box users. I don't think that it means any more than
that.

Or perhaps they aren't. News Corp are not renowned for doing anything

Hence Ofcom paying very careful attention to how Sky handle Sky Digital as a
platform.

Hohoho. That would be the "careful attention" that resulted in no new
FTV cards for a year and a half, systematic lying by Sky on the phone
to the effect that expired sub cards don't decode the FTV channels
(continues to this day), on-screen banners pointing FTV viewers to the
wrong phone number where they were told that no FTV cards exist and
that they would have to subscribe. None of which spurred Ofcom into
any semblance of action, AFAIK.

Sky Digital as a platform can only really be examined from the non-pay
perspective. It's how they deal with the FTV and FTV channels that
really shows them up.

Ofcom are neither gullible nor tolerant when it comes to EPG gatekeepers.
They will know exactly whose launch is pending, who's waiting for an EPG
entry, how long they've been waiting, etc.

Why are they waiting for a number? 176 and 177 were allocated to ITV
when 175 became ITV2. Remember that (apart from the 5 terrestrial
channels) channel numbers in the entertainment group allocated in blocks
of three so ITV will already have them.

We've been over this before. There's a limit in the current EPG software as
to how many channels the software can be aware of (internally, not how
they're numbered in the EPG, not how many are available at once). That limit
has been reached according to Sky, and they're working on an upgrade.

But isn't that an own-goal for ITV?

No, it's only for testing.

It's selectable through "Add
Channels" but has a "Please contact [EPG position data] to subscribe".

That's a "feature" of the Sky EPG software.

Looks like they found a solution. ;-)

And a cunning one at that. £10m for an EPG position. And for ITV3 at that.
Have they *seen* the schedule? Are they mad?

Actually, it's two prominent EPG positions.

£10m for EPG positions for ITV2 and ITV3. Have you *seen* the schedules? Are
they mad?

Plus (118) became ITV2.

That was my partner's favourite channel, she is upset it's gone, no
warning.

I can see that they're having trouble with EPG listings still. All
slots say "This is ITV3".

Also I noticed that the new series "Hack" was showing in 12F16 instead
of 12P16.

One now assumes that TP 27 has a bit of slack on it.

There seem to be several gaps in the blocks of three so probably several
obscure channels have gone. UKTVG2+1 has appeared at the end rather
than taking on a gap.

Contradicting myself, 147 is currently free, so I don't know why UK G2+1
didn't go there.

New blocks always seem to go at the end, even when there's a gap.

Presumably there's a contractual agreement with channels that no-one new
will be entered into the EPG higher up than them.

Then we have an occassional shake-down where channels are given the option
of pulling up the slack or staying where they are.

That certainly looks the most sensible but there are free blocks
starting 169, 175, 205 and 211.
