Today it finally got to Panasonic boxes

Seems so .. my Panasonic DB40 was sitting powered off early this morning ..

The only reason I didn't see mine do that was because the TiVo had already
woken it up to record BBC7 early on.

When I got in from work I got 'your viewing card doesn't work'-type messages
on the box on non-BBC channels, saw the yellow 'Messages' icon on the bar at
the bottom on the radio channels which I don't recall seeing before (or maybe
I just didn't pay attention) then suspected they'd got to the Panny too, and
they had.

I saw on a Thomson box at the weekend (my Mum's) that red-then-backup

makes it
dip into the menu and back out again. On the Panny it just goes back to
showing the "Press red" icon.

Not mine ..

I think mine's a DB30. It's the silver Panasonic and is nearly 4 years old.

What does red-then-backup do for you?

Pressing 'backup' is not an answer, as on the BBC it comes back every 30

mins
(eg. News 24) and on commercial TV it comes back after the ad break.

Works for me .. If I start on channel (purely for example) 551 and switch to
101 and let the EPG disappear of its own accord (i.e dont press BACKUP to
remove it) the channel comes on and no red-dot .. as for any other channel I
haven't (in about 2.5hrs of use) been able to make a red-dot appear on
SkyOne or ITV1 or 2 .. however I did get a message about my phone line being
disconnected when I started the box back up .. I wonder if I reconnect the
phone line will it (the box) detect it and give me red-dots willy nilly ..
and maybe if you unplug your phone lines it will remove your red-dottiness
... maybe ...

Depends on the channel. Sky One don't show the red dot like they used to (they
were absolute *******s for it but just tell people about the fact press-red
content is available, which is the perfect option)

Try BBC News 24.

Given that this is happening across several TV platforms and across

several
makes of digibox, who exactly is to blame? I'm prepared to shift heaven

and
earth to put a stop to this but just need to know who to start with.

James Murdoch ...

Good start

How dare you?
I like the Red Dot.
It gives me a secure warm tingly feeling every time I see it.

What does surprise me is that Sky never took the opportunity to be complete
*******s towards Sky+ owners by making the red dot appear similarly. Since
they were a complete **** to everyone else, I don't understand their logic
here.

Um, interactive services aren't recorded (and can't be recorded as they're
possibly time-sensitive). A "Press Red" indicator would be meaningless for
many time-shifted programmes.

But who actioned this latest step that stops the red-then-backup from

working?

Probably the same people who reason we need DOGs so we know what channel

we are
watching.
Clearly they now also think we are so stupid we need a permanent reminder

about
interactive too.

Strange how people who want/need subtitles only have to be reminded during
the opening sequence.

You're 100% correct. Sadly, this has eluded the broadcasters 100% of the time
when I have put this to them, so whether I record a programme on the TiVo, DVD
or even the humble VCR, the dot serves no purpose on the recording.

Well as I understand it, the Sky+ platform can support interactivity during
playback of a recording, so don't be surprised if it gets enabled some day. The
Sky+ box still has to be receiving the broadcast streamremember else it wouldnt
play back the recording, so presumably there is no reason why the red dot
couldn't display interactive content that was not linked to the recorded program
in the first instance.

Not that long ago it used to also say "Stereo". How would we cope when Dad's
Army came on and we might just think it was in DTS 6.1 ES Discrete, because
there wasn't a "Mono" logo?

*Could* support. But it'd be a lot of work and would lead to inconsistent
results.

Um, "the broadcast stream"? No, it receives *a* broadcast stream, not
necessarily the same one as recorded (and doesn't now need to be connected
to a dish for playback).

so presumably there is no reason why the red dot
couldn't display interactive content that was not linked to the recorded program
in the first instance.

Because the associated interactive content may not be being broadcast at
the time of playback!

Those "red dot zappers" are not the answer as they don't get rid of a problem
that shouldn't be happening in the first place.

As far as the BBC is concerned, there is a very easy answer. These dots do
not appear if you use a real satyellite receiver (or PVR receiver).
